UV's birthday soon - help celebrate?

UV's 10th birthday is on the 21st. PRETTYBIGDEAL amiright? Had a discussion at McHat's today (click here for reference) about something we could do to celebrate. It initially started as a conversation about paying for a new chat, then developed further, into Vizir and I splitting to pay for new forums, then Brandr jumped in about being willing to throw in some dollars towards it, too, and such and such.

Basically, I would love to purchase a new chat for UV. A good chat. And, if Gaeva would like, maybe have willing participants pitch for a new forum? The more that did so, the less it would be. Of course, this is if a new forum is wanted? Or if Gaeva's willing. Or whatever. I would however, like to get a new/good chat?

I'm willing to throw in up to $100 Canadian. I know that's probably a lot over what anyone else can afford, and would think like 5-10 bucks per person could get us a very cool forum. I think the 100 would at least cover a chat? I don't know. I'm silly and didn't bother looking up stuff.

So start searching for chats, people, and I will at least pay for one of those! Also, Gaeva, I guess I need you to okay this? But I'd like to do this for UV. And then let's discuss the desire for a new forum? Is there one at all? What do they cost? Can anyone help out (NO WORRIES at all if you can't - we've all been there).

I'd definitely be able to chip in with up to maybe 50 dollars or so? Which is a lot coming from me (I'mma cheap and greedy one). I think it's a pretty good idea to raise funds for better stuff, one year ago I wouldn't have been able to afford it but now with a job I'm all for it.

Either way, we're struggling to get by over here. Minimum-wage jobs will do that ... At the very most I'd be able to dole out $30-50. Of course that depends on how many hours I work, how much is left after bill payments, and how much money is necessary to keep us fed and whatnot. >.>

Whelp, I'm very game to foot the whole bill for the new chat. Money's not a super big deal for me, so I'd be very happy to do this for UV. It's only if people want/Gaeva is willing to have a new forum that other donations would be needed.

I'm afraid I may not be able to donate anything either, though this does sound rather exciting! I do like the chat the way it is, but a newer/better version could be interesting. Also, a new forum? That could be fun. Perhaps one where users could edit how the colors appear to them...

Ha ha, you guys are awesome! ^_^ This is wonderful to read, it makes me so happy to see people want to help out We do need a new chat, that's for sure, and the idea is to get it before UV's birthday. While nobody is giving input or feedback about the test chat we're currently trying out, I gather it's not really that popular, is it? Well, there are still other options, and some are even free ^_^ Just a bit of trivia, don't know who here remembers, but the worst chat we had here at UV (way worse than the issues with the current one) was a paid one. I put up with it long enough not to feel guilty as I wasn't the one paying for it, but man, it sucked. Take it from me, never buy a chat you can't test out for free beforehand!!

I'll be trying another chat tomorrow, but if somebody else can find a decent chat (that can easily be integrated with this forum), whether free or not, is welcome to speak up ^_^

As for the forum, I'm very curious, why exactly do you want to get a new one?

And I love the chat dearly too.

But if everybody wants a new forum, guess there's gotta be a reason for it. I'm curious to see what the suggestions are.

This one might be a good option. http://mibbit.com/ It's basically IRC, but with an access from a website, I know a website that use this and it works well, and those that already have IRC and are used to IRC can access the channel via their chosen IRC client instead.

I don't think people necessarily want a new forum, just thought I'd throw the idea out there. I, personally, really like the way the forum is! And if everyone else does too, then that's great! No need to try to figure out donations and how to pool money and stuff. I think chat is the bigger deal we're dealing with.

I personally -love- IRC. Only issue with the bottom-line-just-IRC is you have to download the client. But if that Mibbit thinger integrates it into a website that's -awesome-.

Anyone here not enjoy IRC? (How could you not? Bots are amazing fun!! )

Oh ok, if there are no specific reasons for wanting a new forum I'm gonna go with a "please no!!!" on that one ^_^ Moving is quite a hassle, and that's the censored version of my opinion

I used to use an irc channel, and looking at that mibbit I am liking all I see. The only thing I couldn't figure out while going through the wikis and such is how, besides embedding, to make it an actual part of the site without needing to make yet again a new account. Maybe I read over it though, or maybe it's just so obvious it's not even mentioned

Either way, I'm gonna try one last chat, then if that one isn't ok either, I'm trying mibbit, thanks Brandr! ^_^


You know, if you guys really want to donate, UV isn't free, the host requires paying, and I wouldn't mind people helping out for the 10th anniversary this year, the bill will be coming in any week now ^_^ No big amounts as suggested in this thread though, lol, it's not that expensive thankfully!! ^_^

I was wondering on something too. Maybe once the whole bit plot thing is over and DF returns to normal, we could do a collaborative art effort? Making banners for each individual forum, one image by one person ... as kind of a belated birthday thing. Though I think we attempted that before ... did we?

I'm actually beginning to like that new chat.

We used to have separate banners AT EZ, those were made by Barbie ^_^ This forum actually doesn't allow separate banners for each section though, but maybe there's a way around it. At worst instead of a banner some other kind of smaller, but still distinctive images can be made by people and put on different forums ^_^ It's a good idea to combine different kind of creative outlets like this though, me likey!

Chah. Remember a while back? Flare, Viz, myself, and I think some others did this little mini-collab piece of us fighting zombies. That thing was ancient, and horrible, but fun ~

If there's a way around just having one banner, we could totally do something like that.

Even if we can't do a banner, there could always be a sticky topic for each forum with that illustration, talking more about each place, some of its brief history, and maybe even its most frequent visitors/inhabitants. ^^

Yeah, like in the prison, good idea ^_^ And if something significant happens, it can be added, so a personalized history can be made out of the RP that happens in each area by pretty much anybody
