Something big and feathery landed outside on the platform and entered with the ungainly waddle-hop of a grounded raptor. Hylarr had heard voices and, having nothing better to do, decided to investigate. He cocked his head, looking up at Jaderose and then Red, in what might be considered a friendly way. Hylarr was hardly a rare sight to anyone in the village at this point, but it was usually in the company of that rascal Rafaedel that the big hawk was seen. As his keen eyes turned to Bren, he clacked his beak and fluffed up all of his black and white feathers in surprise (something that made him look uncommonly like a fat feathery seatcushion) and mindspoke Red in confusion.

He was tired. Achy. Lost. His body objected to taking one more step, so Bren paused, looking around blearily.

Wistfully wished he knew where he was, though Lili had pointed him in the direction of the Village. She said it had been in the trees, but right now, he didn't think he had the strength to bother looking let alone climb up into lofty branches...or however it was set up.

He had a pinched nerve in his shoulder, and wished he had the sanity to massge it out, but he just stood dumbly in exhaustion. The irritating pain was shooting through his elbow and wrist, and he made a half hearted attempt to adjust the shoulder strap of the pack he was carrying, to no avail.

He started walking again, for the lack of something better to do.

Why, he thought to himself, did Fate feel it needed to pick on him?

Baji-naji, he heard an atevi voice say. Fortune and Chance, the dice in freefall, the pieces shaking and shifting or breaking under the stress.

He felt like he was going to break under the stress.

Bren decided that he just couldn't go on any further, and stopped. Limping he was. Blistered, no doubt, from the boots. Mentally and physically worn out unlike any other time he'd experienced.

Then he looked up.

In the trees, he could see an entire village, that seemed deserted at this time of day...or maybe resting, or maybe not inhabited, he didn't know. But nearby he noted steps, that spiraled up around one of the huge tree trunks, and the swinging bridges above.

Oh, my, he thought, and didn't think he could make it.

But he tried.

He held to the rough bark of the tree on his left, and took each step one at a time, not looking down, but straight ahead at the next step, and the next, and the next, and soon he was nearing the top, and he shut his eyes briefly, taking the steps slowly and re-opened them when he found himself on a platform.

Interesting. From the platform there were bridges, airborn walkways that looked damned frightening. But nearby was a little building, in the branches of one really large tree. It looked abandoned, unused.

Bren swallowed his apprehensions and made his way across the swinging bridge, edging a step at a time. One day, he might learn to dart across the bridges without a problem, but he was concerned in a dazed and dizzy way that he would fall off, maybe just fall asleep on his feet and fall to his death.

He was on the porch of the little house. There was a window. He peeked in. The room inside was bare, plain wood walls, plain floor, raftered ceiling. Not even a place to put a fire, but right then, he didn't care.

He pushed down on the door latch, pushed the door open quietly, looked around. It smelled slightly musty, like old wood, like dust.

He dropped the pack to the floor and went down nearly as fast it did, asleep on the floor without realizing that he had left the door ajar...

Red had been trying to adjust to a home in the trees, though he would be glad when he got the tavern going on the ground, but it was yet to be built.

Instead, he'd created a larder that would shame the best of them, stocking up. Right now he was packing a dusty sack of flour created from wild summer grains he had been harvesting all season, and grinding between large grist stones (it had been hard to find stones of the right shape, let alone getting them to the useful point in a miniature mill he had built, a hand mill).

He'd been working hard, coopering barrels and beating out metal rings from ores he'd found and smelted himself. When he was first starting as a tavern keeper, he had to do everything himself, from scratch, and a small blacksmith's 'shop' was necessary. He was of course making everything himself, for what else did he have to do?

Nothing, but wander and hunt, that's what.

Red had been passing a small hut when he noticed the door to be ajar.

That's funny, it was closed on his first trip by here. He set the sack of flour down by the door and carefully pushed it open, to investigate.

And damned if the very person to be in there was Bren, lying on the floor, asleep. he looked very tired indeed, with dark circles under his eyes, but he seemed peaceful enough.

Red noticed that there was no fire in there, and so he took it upon himself to create one. A quick trip out and back resulted in a large, round pottery dish, specially created to be heat proof, about three feet around and three inches high at the sides. It stood on four sturdy legs, and was large enough to create a nice little hearth fire.

Red set it down in a corner of the room, rearranged the roofing to create a smoke hole, and filled the dish with an inch of fine river sand, and propping small, flat pieces of slate around the edges to catch sparks. He built a small fire with sticks and tinder and fireweed fluff, and soon had a nice little fire going. It was summer, but the nights under the trees could get chill, and it was always nice to have a little warmth.

He sat back quietly and tended the fire occasionally, waiting for Bren to wake.

(OOC: Oh my my, what have we here? A sleepy young paidhi? Then maybe I should introduce him to my quasi ateva. *smiles* )

Jaderose swept along the high swinging bridges of the village, the airborne walkways not making her hesitate at all. Her dress swilred around her, as she headed for her home, but she paused suddenly on the landing of another house.

The door was ajar and a sack of flour sat outside it. Her eyebrows went up, and she peeked inside.

Lying on the floor was a human, vaguely familiar, from pictures she had seen as a girl. He (at least, she figured the human to be a 'he') looked exhausted, marked even in the slight frown lines of a sleeping face.

The atevi healer looked up and noticed the large reptile, closely tending a small fire. She smiled briefly, a flash of white teeth, and her yellow eyes gleamed with refelcted light in the dimmness of the room.

"Is he all right?" she asked the reptile in a whisper.

Bren slept for a long time, a deep exhausted sleep that slowly tried to repair his body, and energy. He was completely oblivious to the movements and footsteps of Red as he built a fire, but a soft voice whispering something finally brought him out of a sound sleep.

Eyes opened and Bren automatically did a scan, meeting with Red's mind, but also with something totally alien and yet, familiar...it was atevi.

Bren leapt to his feet and hit the corner of the hut, cramming himself tight against the wood.

"What's going on?" he shouted in fright, seeing the beautiful young ateva standing in the doorway.

Red had started making tea, and the kettle was heating at the edge of the fire, when a humanoid but not human creature poked it's head in.

He looked up, watching with large red-orange eyes, as she looked at Bren with yellow eyes, then looked at him, and asked if he was all right.

Before the raptor could answer, however, Bren suddenly woke and gave a frightened yell, jumping up and pressing himself into the corner.

Red chuckled. "I was going to say he was fine, and sleeping peacefully, but now I believe he is quite awake."

He set out three hand made wooden cups. The kettle was just beginning to steam. "Tea, anyone? It's chammomile and mint, very soothing."

Bren was still staring, wide eyed, at the ateva when Red offered tea to anyone interested, and mentioned herbs he didn't recognize, claiming them to be soothing. Bren's breathing slowed enough for him to speak.

"Please," he said. Tea...tea sounded nice. Food would be even better, but all in due course.

Red sprinkled the herbs in the cups and delicately poured the hot water over them. Soon the air was filled with the fragrant apple like smell of chammomile, and sweet pungent mint. He lifted two cups, handed one to Bren, and the other to the woman in the doorway.

"Come, sit, we'll all talk. Is anyone hungry?" he asked, lifting his own cup, and taking a sip as the herbs steeped.

Jaderose took the cup delicately, and sipped, recognizing healing herbs. She was slightly distressed, the human seeming so upset by her presence, and she didn't know what to say until he suddenly spoke her language.

She looked at him with keen yellow eyes.

"I am Jaderose," she said softly. "I am a healer, and I live here."

Jaderose smiled.

"I walked here," she said quietly. "When my father was assassinated, and my mother died, I left the household and took up traveling. One day, I just ended up here," she said.

She hadn't thought at all how she had gotten to the Deep Forest. One day, she just walked in.

Red shut his jaws a couple times in amusement at the hawks reaction to Bren.

"Well, Hylarr, this is the way it is: Bren here is a human, but he's got the heart of a dragon. Quite literally, in fact," he said, indicating Bren's glowing chest. "He's lost, hungry, tired, and hasn't a clue how he got here. Plus he has this amazing ability to talk with animals and the languages of other species. I think what he needs at this point is a pack of friends who won't stab him in the back."

Red fed a few twigs to the fire, poking it and stirring the coals around.

"So I think it'd be good to find him a home in the meantime, at least until he can figure out how to return...to wherever it was that he came from."

Red grinned.

"You're making friends already," he said. "Hylarr there, he's with a local boy, I believe, am I correct?" he asked.

He added more wood to the fire, building it up, to a merry blaze, as Bren seemed cold.
