The Dragons Keep (Borealis is not in)

Post by belarusgryphon05 »

(This is to be the Dragons Keep, the home of Borealis. In time, its tunnels will reach to all parts of the Range and the Forest, and maybe beyond. Borealis will have underground access to every part of the surrounding area. But slowly, ever so slowly, will these areas be mined. After three hundred million years, who needs to hurry?)

Borealis flew high about the mountains, in the mists that wreathed their heads, circling and circling until she found what she wanted: the largest peak.

There was a great rough ledge, perfect for her, and she swept in slowly and landed there, balancing on her hind legs, before folding her wings and dropping to all fours.

The ancient old dragon looked about, delving through three hundred million years of experience until she came to the conclusion that never had she sat upon so fine a mountain.

She will make this range her home.

She turned carefully on the ledge, her giant curving horns scoring and smashing any rock that happened to be in the way. She examined it closely. She just simply needed more room to stretch this way... a great blow from her super reinforced skull smashed at the stone, until there was a much wider space. When she reached more solid rock, she brought the stones spikes into play.

She had three types, that periodically replaced themselves, and which grew from the wrist joints of her wings. Two great breaker spikes grew from the outer edge of the joint. They were thick and solid, with gripping backward pointing "blades". These were slammed into rock, breaking it into smaller chunks. Slightly shorter, curved and shovel like spikes between these were for scooping the material out of the way, and much smaller ones provided gripping power.

It was these that she used to eat into the mountainside, forging herself deeper into stone until, three days later, she had created a great entrance cavern with a slightly receded arched opening. The ledge was pushed out farther, to provide landing space, and she carved out great supports in the rock, pillars and curving beams, still carved in their rough state. Later she would come by and recarve everything in the way of her kind, recording the histories of the many parts of the world, which she instinctively seemed to know.

Now she crouched on the ledge, her eyes half closed, the great colorless orbs reduced to slits peering into the dim twilight of very early dawn. She blended perfectly with the rock, seeming a part of the mountainside itself, just as still, and just as silent.

Many hours passed while the old dragon sat and stared, observing many things, but all the time her eyes holding an inward gaze, thinking.

At last she stirred, and loosed a great outpouring of smoky breath, before standing up and turning toward the mountain top. Up above was a jagged spire that soared for a thousand feet. It would make the perfect watch tower. She climbed to the very top of it, putting scratches into the stone to mark what was leaving and what was staying. It was well into the night when began construction.

She dug straight down into the rock, about twice her overall height. This got her down into the center of the mountain. Then, following her marks, she knocked out a wall. Great chunks parted with eachother and tumbled down the mountainside, and the sun rose and set and rose again, until it finally dawned bright on a mountain top that bore four great spires, arching away from the center, which was a great flat plain of rough stone.

Eventually she would polish it till it was smooth, like glass. As it was she wandered back down to her entrance hole and spent a lovely few hours boring out a passageway deeper into the mountain.

Now she had a choice. She could go in any direction she wished, so she chose down, into the bowels of the mountains, so far down that she would actually be underneath the Forest itself, and these Lowerplaces would be her lair.

She tunneled a few thousand feet, regardless of the passing hours and days, an emerged only when thirst bade her to take a trip to the Rivers Deep.

From her ledge she could see everything, and the gleaming jewel of the rivers source was no exception. She gathered herself on the edge, bringing her hind legs beneath her to balance her great weight while she spread her wings digit by digit, stretching the thick membrane, until finally she stretched her massive arms and felt the wind tug at them.

She leapt into the void and felt gravity pull at her. Her wings billowed almost, went taut like a ships sail in a gale, and she hung suspended over the lands below, flying in a wide spiral and going down slowly, until she could "parachute" her way down to straddle the river at its birth point.

It was here that would become known as her drinking spot. The trees were flattened to splinters and wet saw dust as she crowded them out, and those that were missed when she landed were destroyed when she purposefully removed them with her teeth.

She ate them. It mattered not really. In fact, it was very much like a cat or dog eating grass, and the extra fiber helped to cleanse her innards, and provided extra fuel for her body with the ashes. For some reason she was particularly fond of conifers and horse chestnuts.

At last she lowered her bottom jaw into the river, so that it just ran into her mouth, along with anything that happened to be swimming in it. It all washed down her gullet like a flash flood in a canyon, and into her crop, where the water would be absorbed into her tissues, and the living organic material (fish, small animals, etc.) would dwell until she wanted to digest them.

She lifted her head and shut her mouth, water pouring out from between her three rows of wicked teeth, and she swallowed the last of it. She gave a mighty yawn, and turned around in place, knocking even more trees over with her horns, uprooting them (and eating them) until there was nothing but rucked up earth. She pounded this flat into a very hard landing field, in which nothing grew, and would not get the chance to anyway.

She loosed a great billow of fire, scorching the earth, burning off any organic material, until she finally inhaled deeply, extinguishing the flames with her in rushing breath. This was now marked as her place, a great flat, a blackened and half melted area on both sides of the river, which was lightly steaming from the residual heat.

This was hers, out of neccessity. It was that simple.
After her completed mating with Psrdar, Borealis ran him off her mountain, and returned to her building efforts. Now she would need to complete her lair, so she would have a place to lay her eggs and raise her brood.

She dug deeper and deeper into the earth, until the bedrock starting changing, signaling that she had reached the base of the mountains. She dug for several hundred lengths, in that great spiraling fashion of hers, before she stopped and began widening out a chamber.

It was large, and only a few plunges into the rock and her spikes opened up a deep underground cave. Even better, as that would save some digging time. She ripped the rock out left and right, until an entrance large enough for her was made, and she squeezed through.

The cave was huge to the standards of the Smaller Races, but small and cramped for the enormous dragon. Borealis continued clawing and boring her way through the living stone, until she had room in all directions. This was judged by her size, from outstretched wing tip to outstretched wing tip, and standing at a full rear, and as high as she could reach, turning in all directions. Anything in the way came down. The entire cavern was upheld by the massive supporting arches she was famous for.

It was utterly dark, but Borealis didn't need eyes to see as she worked. She started carving out great hollows, incorporating their arches with the main structure. These would be the egg caches, and her brood would be raised here.

In one of the to-be hollows though, Borealis smelled water, and dampness. She dug carefully, and before she knew it, she had water pouring in, from an underground lake.

Hmm.

She plugged the hole with a large boulder and melted the stone into place with her fire, and she sat back to consider her options.

By the force and sound and taste and smell, it was of a whole underground water table, the lake being fed by several inlets and then finding another outlet. It would be good to have water in her lair, but she despised sleeping in a lake, so before she did anything more she would have to dig a water course for it.

Fine.

And she began to carve out a deep channel, and began digging out an entire new cavern, as large as the first, and in the center she dug deeper and deeper, and sloped the sides steeply, until she had her own resovoir. When the channels were completed, she returned to the water problem.

(To be continued...)

(*smirk*)

Enter 'Terry', the Graveling that was currently making it a habit of stalking very random or certain types of people and creatures within the forest. It's most common prey happened to be a Grim Reaper who was, at the moment, lounging in the Lost Fields.

The creature appeared outside of the cave that was dug out, the quills along its back rising in a curious manner, though more defensive. Brigh yellow eyes gleamed mischieviously as it stared into the cavern, its back arching as it stretched forward until it lost its balance and fell with a Graveling-ish 'Oomph!'

The thing was tiny... Standing fully, it only reached three feet, as tall as it was long when walking on all fours. 'Terry' could have easily been mistaken for a starving creature because of the way you could see its ribcage underneath the skin, how thin its long spindly arms were... But the grin and the way it seemed ecstatic about being somewhere so dangerous made it seem anything but weak and weary from hunger. That was just how Gravelings appeared.

There was the sound of something within the cave shoveling out...rock?

Something big.

Very big.

'Terry' was wild with excitement, and it leapt inside the cavern, apparently with a death wish.

It vanished in a fine brown and black mist as soon as it descended into the dark, then reappeared within the cave, holding onto the roof of the cave like a spider, just above the dragon's head. It/she stared down at the beast for a long moment, then went to work loosening a rock that, though big to the Graveling, would've been tiny to the hulk below.

The rock was torn loose and dropped on Borealis' head. 'Terry' was not really worried about being discovered...because it/she started to chuckle like an insane git.

(A little info about Gravelings... On Earth, they were only seen by some mentally handicapped people, and by Grim Reapers. Here, though, they are visible to animals with keen sense, mythical animals with keen sense, immortals, undeads, ghosts...so on.)

Borealis knew there to be an intruder even before the pebble dropped on her head, and a creature in the darkness above began laughing like a git. She snorted, then reared and reached up.

She promptly grabbed the Graveling, as well as several tons of rock around it, crunched it in her huge jaws and swallowed.

She then returned to building and sculpting stone.

(OOC: You're in some touchy territory, there. I hope the Graveling is good at getting out of situations.)

(Haha!!
Terry won't actually do harm to Borealis ... but it'll annoy the hell out of her.)

In a few short seconds, Terry was grabbed up from the ceiling, crushed in the grasp of the dragon and the rocks gathered in that sweep, and thrown into a gaping maw with very sharp teeth. Then the Graveling had to endure moments of being torn and jabbed with little and huge serrated jaws, and then get swallowed.

By the time it hit the hydrochloric acid, Terry was screaming, pounding on the lining of the stomach trying to get out. Even while her feet were being eaten away. And then her legs, and slowly moving up ...

Around this time, Terry remembered she could teleport and blasted out of the gut in a mist of black and brown. The little beast reappeared outside of the dragon, and a good distance away, well out of range of getting swiped at again unless the massive winged lizard decided to run at her. The legs were reforming from thin air, the sound of forming bone drowned out by the pained hissing of Terry. No wonder ... you could see the tissue reforming, the vessels and veins looping from the burnt stumps of legs and muscle regenerating where it was lost. Then the skin, and the Graveling was good as new.

Terry snorted and made a face, then vanished. Back to the ceiling, farther away this time, watching from afar. And plotting where to throw the next rock.

Borealis sniffed when she realized the creature had escaped the confines of her stomach (actually a crop filled with toxic saliva).

Ah, so this creature could teleport. It was there, just out of reach...yeah, right.

Borealis lifted a chunk of rock bigger than a house onto her tail, and then heaved it at the Graveling, crushing it.

Then she continued working, amused despite the intrusion. If this creature could keep coming back, Borealis would have a ball just killing it every time.

There came, witht he boulder coming down, the worst and most high-pitched screech ever imagined. So loud it would've broken glasses. Like the opera singers.

And then a splat as Terry was smooshed.

It mumbled underneath the rock, snorting, and undeniably aggrivated and peeved at its current predicament. It vanished from underneath the rock and healed somewhere out of the cave, when it came back full force.

It entered the cave, sought and found a vine gnarled and growing ont he ceiling of the cavern. Grabbed it, yanked it down -

- and swung in like Tarzaan. Complete with the, "Aaaahahayayaaah!"

(OOC: LOL, there are no vines growing this deep in the earth. Nor is there easily an "outside". Borealis is burrowing far underneath the mountains here, an egg lair.)

Borealis sat back watching like a cat. She was begining to enjoy the company of this silly little creature, as strange as it was. If it could keep coming back, why, Borealis would be more than happy killing it every single time.

As it swung in, screeching, the huge old dragon reared her head back and snapped her jaws around the Graveling. Speared between her teeth, it wouldn't be able to do much but scream until it got away.
Well ... Terry did start to swing in like Tarzaan. But that only lasted so long ...

Because jaws chomped down on it again, leaving it squirming and screaming within the mouth of Borealis. Lovely.

The screams mellowed down to an agitated, gruffy, "Hrmph," and Terry was gone in a mist again.

The Graveling reappeared on the muzzle of the dragon, fully recovered in a few short instants. In a daringly stupid move, Terry poked a finger between the dragon's eyes and rasberried her, as if to say, 'Hah! Ya didn't kill meh!'

After that odd display, it proceeded to scamper up Borealis' snout and onto the top of her skull, bouncing up and down like a kid with too much sugar in its system.

It actually lasted for about two seconds, and then Terry was gone to torment some other poor folks.
Borealis was dissapointed that her amusement had so cowardly left, and looking at her problem, decided that it could be left for later, and she returned to the surface, climbing to her four spired perch, where she leapt off and took flight flight, filling her massive gas chambers to the full for maximum flight capacity.

(OOC: Borealis has left this thread for now.)
