I Don't Belong in This Pack

Post by Gaeva Winged Unicorn »

Her ears laid back the brown and tan wolfess looked at her three newborns carefully. She was exhausted, and while her mother instict had already kicked in, she was not happy. Watching the three dark bundles making soft whimpering noises as they searched for milk, she whined softly. They were her cubs, but not her mate's.

He had made it clear he did not want these unwelcome cubs, and had been sure they would be born as monsters. But they weren't. Lowered her head the wolfess licked the three gently. They looked like newborn wolves, they smelled like wolves, as far as she could tell, they were wolves. And she loved them from the moment she laid eyes on them. How could she reject them? Three tiny male cubs, helpless and dependent on her.

During a solo hunt she had been tricked by a strange wounded wolf to accompany him into the mountains. Once there she had found out he wasn't really a wolf, nor wounded and helpless. And evil demon shapeshifter had thought it funny to lure her away and then attacked her. Being able to take the form of almost anything she never stood a chance, though she did defend herself with fang and claw, it had no use.

She had been surprised he let her live after he had tortured her, wounded her, mocked her weakness. But quickly it became obvious why she had interested him. He told her he admired her beauty, had been watching her quite a while, and before she could do anything about it she knew the real reason he had brought her here. There was nothing she could possibly do to stop him, and simply howled.

Her mate and the rest of the pack found her the next day, wounded and humiliated. They helped her as best as they could. But soon her pregnancy became evident and she knew who had caused it. So did her mate. Fearing that whatever might be born would be a threat to their pack it had been decided whatever young came forth would not be allowed to live.

It was now four months later, and these three little cubs were the evidence of that horrible day. Like her mate she had feared they would be monsters like their sire, but no, they weren't. They were like her other litters. Little cubs, little wolf cubs. Ad they depended on her for survival. They had never done anybody any harm, how could she now punish them with death?

Setting her mind the wolfess decided to face her mate and the pack on their behalf. She wasn't going to turn her back on them, no matter how they had been conceived. Finally she allowed the three to suckle, and they quieted their whimpering. The brown and tan female looked to the far opening of her den, wondering how she would handle this. Sighing the wolfess licked the three again. She would find a way to handle it. Her mate would just have to deal with the fact that she could not turn her back on her cubs, and that she was willing to leave the pack if they did not accept her decision.

Her ears still backed the wolfess whined softly, her golden gaze on the tunnel that led to the outside, and to the rest of her pack.
