OOC: At this point I don't know if Tad or Myst are going to be in it. I know I signed up, but... I dunno. *Has to check back through the thread* Where did we leave off??! o.O; By the way, Broken Relic's open.
IC: Drizzt decided to skirt along the edge of the city for now, turning and keeping the wall on his right. His guard was up; he was back in an environment where he'd grown up and was on the lookout for anyone who even barely appeared spiteful. A drow city was quite literally murderous, full of betrayers and mutineers. As he'd once thought before: The Underdark, a place of no hopes and no place to dream.

There is no drow word for 'love.' How can the idea survive, when the language holds it silent? Goodness, too, is not something for a drow to ponder. Friends are existant, but not on a close level. Friends can be dropped as quickly and easily as a loose stone. Drow stay friends only as long as each can benefit from the other, and once one decides he or she is bored with this individual, he or she simply kills them.

Drizzt passed Houses made into connecting stalactites and stalagmites. Globes and rings of faerie fire decorated towers and entrances, as well as balconies and fences. The bigger and more embellished the House, the greater the House was in the drow hierarchy. The fences were made of what looked like giant white spider-webbing, each strand larger around than Drizzt's arm. He made a point not to touch the webbing; he remembered it from his youth. He turned his head slightly and hissed a warning at Shadowcat: "Do not touch the fence webbing. I shall have to remove the part stuck there." He finished his point with a barely-noticeable gesture to his scimitars.

Drow milled around in the city; some wandering aimlessly, some with a purpose. Large lizards crawled up and down the walls, saddled and reined like horses with drow riding upon them. Women wore long black-and-purple robes with silver trimming, decorated with spiders. They walked with an air of pride, as if they ruled this city and everything in it. There was a good reason for this attitude -- they did. These were priestesses and High Priestesses of Lloth, the Spider Goddess of the drow. Drizzt felt a shudder of revulsion creep up his spine, and he fought to hide it. Females were regarded as much more dominant than the lowly males, who ranged from royalty to soldiers to servants.

This city was not near as large as Menzoberranzan, but certainly larger than what he thought Gaeva and the Deep Forest could handle.

He stepped into a small passageway carved into the rock wall, and accidentally stepped right in the way of one of the dreaded drow females. Her white hair cascaded down her shoulders, kept long in the fashion of High Priestesses. Every visible part of her black skin was adorned with gold and silver spidery jewelry. The tiny red dots of heat that were her eyes glared back at him.

"On your knees, male!" she spat in the drow tongue, pointing to the ground.

Drizzt calmly stared back at her, giving no sign that he'd even heard her. When she repeated the message and gesture, Drizzt still stood silently, defiantly.

The female roared in anger and unclasped a whip that had hung at her belt. She held it in her hands, and Drizzt could count the many snakes that came alive in her hands, hissing and spitting, joined halfway down the whip's length, fading into a thick, black handle. Seven heads leered at him, showing long fangs. She lashed at him with it, and Drizzt took a step back, blocking with the scimitar he didn't even remember drawing. Three snake heads dropped to the ground, but one managed to catch his wrist. The priestess screamed in fury and began a second lash, but Drizzt deftly slammed the blade into her waist and drew it back out. Staring into those lifeless eyes gave him a sense of satisfaction.

She fell to the ground, and Drizzt stepped over the body, assuming Shadowcat was still following and wondering how many more individuals he was going to have to kill before he finished his quest.

He heard a scream from what sounded like a small child, and looking up at a House nearby (but not at the right angle to see what he'd done, fortunately) he saw a boy, no more than ten years old, on the ground writing in pain. A priestess stood over him, lashing with a similar whip as the one Drizzt had just fought. Over and over again the snakes bit into the child's skin, and only then did Drizzt notice the numb, paralyzing feeling spreading from his wrist up his arm and down into the fingers of his left hand. Watching this display made Drizzt shake and seathe with rage, and he wished he could do something.

The child looked up and met Drizzt's violet eyes with his red, tear-filled ones. In that moment, Drizzt knew he had to do something. He saw an image of himself at ten, with his sisters Vierna and Brieza ruthlessly beating him in the same manner.

He knew now what his beloved father, Zak'nafein, must have seen in him at this age, seeing the streak of innocence and wondering what would become of him if he was allowed to attend the Weapons Academy. Zak was sure that he would change into the typical ruthless drow elf, and once he'd graduated, he'd even tried to kill him, fearful that the Academy had broken the concience he'd had. But that concience and the innocence he'd had at this age had survived, and Zak'nafein died soon after, sacrificed to Lloth. He'd had never had the courage to leave Menzoberranzan, as he'd so wanted to do. Drizzt, in Zak's honor, used his own.

Not stopping to think, he drew his bow, fitted an arrow, and let fly, aiming at the doomed priestess.

(OOC: *blinkety-blink* Wow... Crap, that was long! O.O)

Re: Attn: Dolphinsong -- Kitty wanna play??
The female fell silently to the ground, and Drizzt glanced around, making sure no one had been alerted as of yet. So far, no one had, and he rushed forward and knelt beside the child. He made a hand signal in the Drow silent language, and accompanied it with the Drow word, "Doer."* The child looked up at him, then finally rose and followed.

"Shadowcat, I know what I need to know and I have done more damage than I intended to. Let's get out of here." He raced back the way he'd come, out the exit and back into the caverns of the Underdark, thinking all the while that this had been all too easy.
Re: Attn: Dolphinsong -- Kitty wanna play??
"Yes, cat, that is exactly what I plan to do with him," Drizzt replied in the common tongue, so that the boy wouldn't understand him. "I see something in him, the same resiliance to drow evil that was and still is in myself. My father would have done the same thing."

But the risk of a trap was not a risk Drizzt could wave off so easily. So far he'd managed to avoid the whole of Cal'ramn Tolke coming after him and Shadowcat, and it was an accomplishment not to be taken lightly. Yet Shadowcat was right, and Drizzt couldn't help but think this entire trip foolish. He'd accomplished nothing except gather ill news; he couldn't see Gaeva, Geaven and the rest of the Deep Forest battling a drow army this huge. And it was still less than half the size of Menzoberranzan.

(OOC: I don't remember if Guenhwyvar was out or not, if she already is then disregard the next two paragraphs. >.<)

Drizzt stopped for a moment, and it took the boy, who had been running slightly ahead, a moment to realize he was running alone. He walked back to see what the adult drow was doing. Drizzt took the statuette of Guen out of his pouch, placed it on the cavern floor, and summoned the huge panther.

The boy's eyes went wide, but he didn't run away in terror. Clearly, this wasn't the only bit of magic he'd been exposed to. Guen looked at the drow boy and sniffed him. Finally she turned back to Drizzt, and he could have swore that had she been human, she would've winked.

(OOC: I thought I replied to this already... Yeah, but I thought Drizzt dismissed her earlier.)

Drizzt was irritated, not particularly at the cat, but at himself for not thinking things through. "Well cat," he spat, "what do you suggest we do?" He regretted the words immediately; who was he to take out his anger on another?
A smile graced the adult drow's lips, grim but determined. "Except we aren't humans, remember? Sounds like a fine plan to me." He set off at a run in the direction Shadowcat had been referring to. The boy followed, wondering what the elder had been talking about and wondering when he was going to find out.

Re: Attn: Dolphinsong -- Kitty wanna play??
Drizzt briefly turned to the young one and switched to the drow language. "I'm sorry to be so abrupt; I'm taking you out of here. I'm Drizzt; that is Shadowcat. What's your name?"

The boy replied promptly, "Kalannar Kh'ilth, of House Kh'ilth, Eleventh House of --"

Drizzt cut him off with a wave of his hand. "You're out of Cal'ramn Tolke, now, Kalannar, so I'd suggest you drop that name. I'll call you Kalannar, or Kalan for short." Kalan nodded. "Can you fight, Kalan?"

"I have no weapons," Kalan protested. "But I'm okay with a bow."

Drizzt unslung his bow and quiver and handed them to the boy, who took them and belted the overlarge quiver on without a word.

"Be prepared to be forced to kill your own kind, Kalan. Don't hesitate." With that, he sprinted after Shadowcat, drawing his scimitars. He had no expectations of the sort of Kalan; after all he'd been barely five minutes out of what had been his home for around ten years. It had taken Drizzt twenty years to get over killing his own kind. Still, he prepared to keep an eye on the child, cover him if he had to.

Drizzt nodded. "Kalannar," he called, and the boy stepped out from the safety of the shadows, shame-faced. Drizzt said nothing about the issue; but lead the trio out back out the way they'd come.

Re: Attn: Dolphinsong -- Kitty wanna play??
Drizzt walked alongside the feline, and Kalan hung back, still following. "I lived in Menzoberranzan, a drow city, until I was around thirty. That's still very young for a drow. I stepped out into the sunlight, and though the light hurt my eyes, I got used to it. He will to."

He was being selfish, he knew it. He hadn't even asked the child if he wanted to come with; he'd simply dragged him along like something he'd stolen from the drow city.

Huh?
Drizzt turned sharply towards Shadowcat, eyeing her before returning his eyes to the tunnel ahead of them. "Ask him what?"

Kalan, lingering behind them, kicked rocks towards the adult drow's feet. He didn't seem to notice.

Kalan felt so very alone. He knew not what would happen, or where he was going, and silence had been beat into his brain so many times that he dared not ask. This renegade was still drow, just as he. He knew not whether he, like all the others, worshipped Lloth, the spider-queen; or whether he, like all others, had a heart of darkness. He did know one thing -- the only reason he was going with him was that he had a chance of escaping Cal'ramn Tolke forever -- and if worse came to worse, he might be able to escape from the Drizzt and Shadowcat.

Oh. ^^
Kalan was curious as to what the adult drow and the cat were talking about. He glanced at Guenhwyvar for the first time in a while to see that huge feline staring at him intently. Unnerved, he quickly looked away.

Drizzt slowed enough to fall in step with Kalannar, and switched to the drow language. "Do you trust me, Kalan?"

Kalan glanced at him. Deciding he'd been serious, he answered shortly. "No."

Drizzt nodded. "I thought not. Worry not, young Kalannar; you will in time. I'm sorry I yanked you out of there with no explanation; I promise to give you a full account after a while. But, tell me, did you want to be rid of that city?"

The youngster didn't reply right away, preferring to think about it for a minute. Finally he answered. "I dreamed about seeing the surface."

"Have you seen it before?" the adult prompted.

"No."

"Then you are in for a treat, young one, because that is where we are going. I will introduce you to Gaeva; she is a winged unicorn mare." He used the common tongue for those words; the drow tongue didn't have a name for "unicorn" or "mare". "She is also the leader of Deep Forest, that is the place we are going. You shall see."

Kalan's eyes were as huge as dinnerplates by the time Drizzt finished. He had no clue what a unicorn mare was, nor what a forest was, but he hardly cared. The only thing that stuck in his mind was the fact that he was going to see the surface!

"I want to learn to fight," Kalan said finally, as if it was a condition.

"I want to see you fight," Drizzt answered. "I didn't get a chance to see you use that bow." He gestured to the bow that was still slung over Kalan's back, and Kalan blushed. Drizzt was quick to add, "Don't be embarrassed, Kalan, that was exactly what I expected you to do. I never really expected or wanted you to fight. Had it not been for my past, I would have done the same thing. I have done the same thing, in fact."

"What is your past?" Kalan asked.

"In time, young one; in time. Now there is too much to think about; to many Underdark creatures to be prepared for. Be on your guard." With that Drizzt sped up to join Shadowcat up ahead, leaving Kalan walking behind with Guen.

Drizzt shrugged, not really caring. "If it is easier, then I have no objections."
Ugh. I completely forgot about this, and then I tried doing an IC post in the river. I would have posted in Visions, but since it's closed, I'm going to conclude this one here by saying that Shadowcat, Drizzt, and Kalan made it to the surface and Shadowcat went one way; Drizzt and Kalan went theirs. Now they are in a cave near the river, currently snowed in. XD

-whoo- Drizzt and Kalan have now (FINALLY) left this thread. ^_^
