Laying his ears flat, Smoke glared into the storm, unable to pinpoint the location of the mental call. It had seemed familiar somehow, and he knew it had been a female, but whoever had spoken knew the art of secrecy well. Unless she chose to show herself he would not be able to find her. Snarling angrily to himself, the mountain lord turned away from the ledge, tail lashing. Whatever he had intended to do before the interruption, the mood was lost now. Besides, he would not be able to simply leave this world anymore. Someone out there knew things he had never evealed. Pride and anger, if nothing else, would keep him alive until he found who it was, and dealt with them. Still glowering, the massive tiger vanished into his cave to wait out the storm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Smiling faintly to herself, Memory watched Smoke retreat. Her timing had been as impeccable as usual, though for once she had not planned it that way. She could feel his curiousity, tinged with wrath, and felt a slight, matching curiousity inside her own mind. How would he react when he found out who she was? He would find out eventually, she knew. Even the most skilled of cats could not outsmart another feline forever, much less a shapeshifter. To let him find her on his own would take all the fun out of the reaction anyway. It would be much better to present herself to him now, while he was still unsure of himself. It was the perfect chance. Eyes glittering in anticipation, the slim grey shape flitted down the tree and out of the forest swiftly and silently, unseen.
She stepped unto the ledge less than an hour later, having made good time despite the raging storm. Smoke was barely visible in the darkness of his lair, resting his head on his paws with his eyes shut. Her approach masked by the roar of the winds, Memory padded forward to the mouth of the cave. The pale grey figure stopped there and sat down calmly, wrapping her tail neatly around her front paws. The piercing aqua eyes focused on her distant relative with a slight smirk. For a moment, all was peaceful and calm save for the howling winds outside...and then she spoke.
Despite the heat, the wind blew fiercely. It was the wind of the ocean, calling to mind swelling waves and the distinct saltwater fragrance. It came in strong gusts, easing down to the tiniest of breezes before rising until its force bent the trees to a sharp angle. Any sensible creature would have stayed in his or her cave in the mountains, or in the safety and calm of the forest. The Meadow had been temporarily abandoned, the wind easily sweeping through the wide, treeless area. It stirred up ashes from the Lost Fields, making a cloud of soot that could choke the unwary. The safest place to be was among the trees, at the very heart of the Deep Forest. And they were there, all those of the good, talking and laughing together as they waited for the winds to subside.
There were a few of the mountain residents amidst the crowd as well. Lepidus-Malus was there, talking quietly with Gaeva, Nihilanth, and the blue-horned one. But then, the black and white unicorn never seemed quite evil . She acted as if she was neutral, half good and half bad. So she didn’t really count as one of the bad side, at least not as this unseen observer was concerned. That little firepup Devil was closer. He would be rather nasty once he grew up a little, probably. Until then, he would be little more than a nuisance at best. Barbannis claimed to be evil, but he was just too nice, too caring. He didn’t always show it, of course, but it came out if you watched long enough. So he too was out. There were no others from the mountains. Which meant that there was no creature who was truly evil among the large group below. Mildly disappointed, the silent figure in the trees slipped through the canopy and away.
This unnoticed creature was neither good nor evil. No ties were held with either side, and she went where she pleased. The mountains and the forest held no differences to the slim feline. Their inhabitants did not concern her, nor even effect her ways. They were simply there. Few knew her, though she knew much of most of them. For her habit was to watch, silent, unseen, hidden in the branches and the bushes. One learned many interesting things through this habit, as she well knew. With such information came power. Yet power meant little to the pale gray feline. What she craved was knowledge, and knowledge she got.
One might wonder why she had been searching for the odd ones out in the large group she had just left behind. The answer was really quite simple. The lithe cat saw all the forest inhabitants on a regular basis. The mountain dwellers were much more interesting, for she had yet to witness all their little secrets. But there was time, and plenty of it. She was not worried. Nevertheless, boredom drove her toward the far end of the forest. To the point where the trees ended…and the mountains began.
The wind howled fiercely around the broad grey frame poised upon the ledge. Here in the mountains, there were no trees to deflect its force, no barriers to bind its rage. There was only the tall, cold rock of the peaks, and the chill fury of the storm. Yet even the mighty power of the winds could not overcome the strength of the massive beast. He stood in the face of the gale, forbidding and deadly…and bitter. What was this world to him? It did not care of him. Not a creature he had met knew who he really was, and certainly none of them had bothered to find out. For all her words of peace and love, Gaeva still knew nothing of reality. The pale unicorn thought all could be solved through kindness, and that it was possible to have eternal peace. But then, he mused, what else could he expect from a unicorn? They were fools, all of them, ignorant and pitiful. They had their happiness, of course--ignorance is bliss, at least until the world falls down on you.
Angrily, the great tiger snarled at the raging winds, daring them, defying them. Why should he be bound to this world of treachery and lies? He had no ties to hold him down. No one cared about him, and he cared about none of them in return. Life gave him no pleasure, only pain. There was no sun in his life. It was dead, fallen, strangled by clouds and smoke. When it fell, it had set fire to all he had once known, all that was flammable and precious. In moments, he had been left with only embers and ashes. Dying, dead embers, and cold, bitter ashes, choking him, suffocating him. Somehow, he had survived, coughing and despairing, stumbling out of the past. Why should he not finish now what had been left undone then?
Slowly, reexamining the thought, he explored it further. What reason did he have to stay alive? None. Who would even notice his death? Perhaps a few, but only because the mountains would have no lord. Who would care then, if he died? No one. He had only to leap from the ledge he stood on to the sharp, jagged rubble below. He would fall to his death as he had fallen to pain and suffering for so long. What did he have to lose? His life, and therefore nothing of value to him. What did he have to gain? An escape from misery… With a strange new light glowing in his eyes, he rose his muzzle to the furious clouds and roared out his challenge.
Even the rising storm could not drown out his cry. Its angry, bitter echoes rang through the mountains above the wailing winds. As he had expected, no creature heard his words in their caves and their distant trees. Like a trapped, wounded beast, pain and anger combined. He stepped forward to the edge of the mountain bitterly. Only then did a quiet, soft, insistent voice interrupt his untamed thoughts. It would not be ignored, that foreign whisper in his head, and he stepped back in bewilderment as it went on.
