((OOC: Dolphy is still quite busy, and it's time a mod hopped in. Hope you don't mind!))

Rafaedel Birchbeam was feeling restless. The the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and there was countless goodies out in the forest for the young child to plunder, but here he was delivering vegetables to the villagers. That's what you got for staying with Lenanu, he supposed. Since he had been able to get up and around from the village gardener and leader's home, he had spent a great deal of time weeding, planting, and generally dirt grubbing. The funny thing was Lenanu was always asking him to wash up. Adults here made no sense. The last person he had stayed with took the same stance on dirt he did: it did no harm as long as you weren't wounded, and being a bit dirty was just another layer of protection when you didn't want to be noticed. Raf did not enjoy being noticed one bit, in fact, it was rather frightening.

So used to the intertwining bridges and paths of the village that he did not even bother to look where he was going, navigating the tree road--as he called it--with careless ease. His small arms were full with the basket he was to deliver to Rania (was that her name? it didn't sound right), the summer vegetables had done well, and Lenanu had been pleased to be able to share more of the bounty. Mun could git ta hatin' squash, he thought with amusement to himself, thoroughly content to eat as much of the stuff as Lenanu could serve up. After having spent 7 of his 11 or so years without a full belly, he wasn't terribly choosy.

Finally he arrived at the dwelling he was seeking, cradled in a massive oak. After a moment's hesitation, he simply walked boldly in--the weight of the basket was getting to be a bit too much for him.

"'Scuze miss, Lenanu sent me t'give ye--" he fell abruptly silent as his eyes adjusted to the slightly dimmer light inside. The basket fell nerveless from his fingers as he gaped at Korendil without shame. For one wild seccond, Raf had thought he'd seen his father, but when that moment passed, he still had ample reason to stare. Raf might as well have been Korendil in miniature, save for his emerald eyes, right down to the pinched too-thin look of his pale skin and his black hair. Taking in the older elven's scars, Raf unconsciously touched his side where the bandits had branded him several months ago. It was a very good thing Lenanu had not seen that particular hurt. He was not prepared mentally for the explanation she might want.

Realizing he was staring, the elven youth flushed a deep red and went to his knees to gather the spilled veggies and cover his confusion. As if the fates were granting him a boon to make up for his humiliation, the elven lady's name snapped into his head. "S-sorry Lady Racia. I j-j-jus' came t' drop off some veggibles from L'nanu, an th b-basket was getting blamed heavy..." he trailed off, cursing his stammering tongue and his babbling. He straightened with the basket, now refilled, and looked down, fighting the urge to stare at Korendil more, his face the picture of embarrassed bewilderment.

Joining- Korendil

Post by darkgryphonmage »

Kory untangled yet another branch from his long black hair before he leaned against one of the large tree trunks to take a breather. He could feel sweat on his neck and wished that he could wipe it away, but that stupid collar around his neck prevented him from doing that, though he was rather used to that by now. The elf took a deep breath and rubbed his eyes. Even though he and his guide had just been walking to get there, they had been walking for a very long time and he was not in good shape at the moment. After all the running he had done over the past two days, he was exhausted and he hadnt been in good condition before anyway.

While the elf was in good enough shape to dance for an hour or so, that was about it. His masters hadnt let him do a lot of exercising other than cleaning and he certainly wasnt cut out for this much hiking. Korendil didnt want to complain though. Racia had done so much to help him and was doing a lot by taking him to the village she had told him about. He didnt want to be ungrateful by complaining or by taking too long to rest, so with a small sigh, Kory pushed away from the tree and continued walking again.

Finally, as he pushed through a group of vines a few minutes later, Korendil got his first look at the village. Silver eyes widened as he looked up and up and up at the houses that trailed up the incredibly thick and tall trees. He had never seen anything like it before. Large buildings and things sure, but he had never before seen dwellings in trees, atleast not like these.

"Oh my..." he breathed. He took a step back upon seeing the people walking around as he felt a wave of nervousness flood into him. Until he had gotten here, he had been thinking only of a safe haven he could be safe in, but now that he saw the creatures and other elves there, how did he know this place was safe? He had thought that the lands his city owned had been safe and he had found out otherwise, how was he to know this place was trustworthy, that all of this wasnt just a trap to make him a slave to someone else? The place itself didnt look threatening, but looks could be deceaving.

Racia appeared beside him without a noise as she looked up at it a moment. She turned to look at him, a smile on her face as she watched him stare, "It's quite alot to take in I'm sure." she said with a smile, "Come on, I'll show you around and we can get some proper food and rest up there. You can stay in my house till you find one for your own." she said, taking a few steps forward and turning to see if he would follow.

Kory looked between Racia and the village behind her for a few moments before silently nodding. Though he still felt a bit, ok quite a bit, nervous there was nothing he could do but follow her and hope that he had finally met someone that he could trust. He could not survive out in the forest. Before he had been captured he had been a noble, he knew nothing about hunting, gathering etc. It was go with her or perish in the woods and she had not seemed threatening toward him atleast yet.

"Are you sure? I do not wish to be a burden on you," he said quietly as he followed along behind her. I cant believe she is doing all this for me. She did not even know who I was until she saved me. Some day I will find a way to repay her...if all this kindness is truely real, he thought.

Racia approached what seemed to be a bush. She pushed aside some brush and a elevator came into view. She smiled, "Go ahead and get in" she said, stepping back to allow him in. The wooden elevator had taken her by surprise when she had first arrived, as she hadn't seen such technology before. She wouldn't be surprised to see him faint by now.

Korendil looked at the elevator suspiciously. "Why, what is it?" he asked as he tried to figure out what it did. To him, it simply looked like a very small wooden room, a large box actually, and he saw no reason why he should get inside it. As much as he didnt want to admit it, the thought of going inside it made him nervous. Once he got inside, he would be trapped and that did not make him feel good at all. The elf felt a shiver run up his spine as he thought about getting inside, with close walls on three sides; it would be very easy for it to be a trap.

Racia raised a brow at his tension, "It's a elevator, the easiest way to get up to the trees. You just get in, pull the lever and it lifts you up." she said with a warm smile, "It won't hurt you. I promise, see" she said, getting in. She pulled the lever and rose a few feet in the air before lowering it, dropping back down to the ground, "Now it's either this or we tie a rope around your waist and lift you up from the top." she said with a shrug. Of course, she was only joking, they had never done that before, that she knew of.

"Elevator..." Korendil said slowly, putting the word to memory as he continued to look at it and the ropes above it that led up into the canopy. He had never heard of an elevator before, they had not needed them where he was from. The buildings in his old city had been big, but most were only a few stories high, easily reachable by staircases. None reached the many, many stories these trees must be. Though even once Racia explained it and hopped inside herself, Kory wasnt sure he wanted to use it.

The elf jumped back a step in surprise as the thing did indeed go up a bit before coming down. He had been rather skeptic about it, but it seemed she hadnt been lying. Amazing... he thought, quite in awe though still nervous about using it. Finally, after another few moments of hesitation, he stepped slowly inside. Kory turned around to face the front and looked at the edge of the elevator and over his shoulder at the back like he wasnt quite sure which one he wanted to stand closer to. Standing toward the front would make him feel less trapped, but he had seen the rope leading into the branches and knew it went very high; standing near the edge might not be a good idea.

Racia smiled, amused by his hesitation, "Hold on" she said, turning and hitting the lever. The elevater started it's slow assent to the top of the trees. They soon came upon a platform that seemed almost like a center that led to all different directions via wooden bridges. Racia stepped onto the platform and waited for him, "My house is over this way" she said, pointing directly across from them, "On the edge so I can keep a look out for anything entering the village." she said, shrugging.

Kory grabbed onto the wall beside him with one hand to steady himself as the elevator started to rise. As they rose, his mind made a decision and he moved to the back, away from the edge as the ground got farther and father below them. He didnt even want to think about what would happen if he fell from the height they were reaching. Either he would die or be so broken he would wish he were and neither sounded fun. For one he would risk being trapped if it meant he was safe from that fate.

As they rose, he took a look around at the tree tops- making sure he didnt look down- and couldnt help but smile a little. It was rather beautiful, with the sun shining through and creating lovely shadows around them. With that on his mind, it seemed like only a moment later when they stopped. Kory silently sighed with relief that the thing hadnt fallen on the way up, before following Racia onto the platform. Once on it, Korendil took a small step toward the edge and glanced down. He quickly stepped back, his face slightly pale. If he was going to end up staying there, he knew it was going to take a while before he was used to their heights. The elf shook his head slightly before looking at his new companion and waiting for her to lead him.

Racia went into the maze of bridges, walking along without a care in the world that they were so far up. After a few minutes they ended at a small hutch set a little further out from the rest and set in a huge oak. Branches tined up to the top so she could have a good lookout spot. She walked towards the cloth door and pushing it aside. It was small but cozy. There was a pile of weapons in the corner and next to it, a small cot. There was a closed off area with a tub. There was a trunk at the end of the bed which Racia walked over to. She dropped her bow and quiver in the pile of weapons before opening the trunk. She pulled a new shirt from inside and disapeared behind the viel. When she came back up, she was tieing her leather corset tighter, "That's better." she said with a smile, "Have a seat, rest, by god you need it." she said with a smile, "There are some clothes here if you want to change and then I can see about getting that collar off you." she said, pulling out a set of trousers and a shirt for him, not to mention a pair of boots.

As they walked across the bridges, Korendil tried glancing over the edge once more, however as the same dizzy feeling he had experianced before began to return, he quickly decided it would be best to look forward. Later on he might get used to the height of the dwellings, but at the moment he definately was not and the elf didnt think it would be a good idea to try getting used to it right now; his body was rather weak and he was dizzy on his own anyway. I feel like I could sleep for a week, Kory thought, his mind and body longing so much for a comfortable place to just sleep for a long while that is almost hurt.

Kory followed the other elf into the hutch and looked around in interest. It was not very large, but certainly had a comfortable, safe feel to it and he felt himself relaxing a bit more. Perhaps he had just been paranoid; nothing about this felt like a trap. "Your place is very nice," he said quietly, his lips forming a small smile. When she handed him the extra clothes, Kory seemed hesitant to go change. "But I am filthy. I do not wish to dirty your clothes..."

Re: Joining- Korendil

"'Scuze miss, Lenanu sent me t'give ye--"

Korendil had turned toward the door to see who had arrived even before the boy spoke. A few years ago, he probably wouldn’t have noticed Raf until he heard the voice, but his years of slavery had taught him that it was in his best interest to learn to unconsciously listen and watch everything around him. The young elf's footfalls had caught his attention and he had sensed the boy presence before instantly turning to see who it was; not wanting to leave his back open to whoever had entered behind them.

Kory's eyes widened slightly and he felt a very strong pang of homesickness as he saw the young elf. The boy reminded him so much of the children from his city. They were yet another thing he hadn’t appreciated until he no longer had them running around him as he walked through the streets. Kory started to open his mouth to give a tentative greeting, but before he could say a word, the basket fell from Raf's arms, sending its contents rolling along the floor in every direction. His gaze followed a few as they rolled away before turning to the young lad and realizing that he was being stared at. For a moment, he looked around the room, trying to pretend he didn’t notice the staring as a blush crept into his cheeks, then finally turned and met the boy’s gaze.

Do I look that odd, or…did I perhaps frighten him? he wondered, a bit shocked at the thought that he had scared someone. Korendil had hardly been intimidating before he had been kidnapped and broken, much less now. He watched Raf for a few moments, listening to the boy’s stammering, caught between helping him and staying where he was. Either he had just startled the young elf by being in a house that was not his, or there was something that made the kid nervous. If he tried to help, he might just make it worse, but he couldn’t help but feel guilty as he watched Raf picking up the spilled vegetables.

When Raf stood up, Kory noticed the tip of a vegetable sticking out from beneath a piece of furniture near him. After draping the clothes in his arms over the back of a chair, the elf walked over and knelt down to pick it up. Then slowly, both to avoid scaring the boy and because he himself was still felt a bit nervous, he walked over to Raf and held it out. “Uh…you dropped this,” he said quietly, giving the other elf a small smile. “Sorry if I startled you.” It occurred to him as he waited for an answer that the boy looked quite a bit like him; complete with the too thin and very pale look to him.

Korendil instantly stopped as he caught the look in the boy's eyes. Of the many things he had been expecting to see- a bit of fear or shyness- the haunted look was not one of the them. The boy's eyes looked like they had seen far too much for someone as young as him and that many of the things had been far from pleasant. It left Kory stunned for quite a few moments. No child should ever have that look in their eyes. Children were supposed to be protected, sheltered, so they could live happily during those early years. What had the poor boy been through?

Kory saw the younger elf relax just a hair and wondered what Raf had expected him to do. Actually...I can imagine. The world is hardly a kind place for most. Apparently children arent even safe any longer, he thought sadly. It seemed he was not the only one who was having problems. Hoping that maybe the boy would relax a bit more, Kory took a small step back to give him more room. He didnt realize it for a moment, but thinking about the boy's problems was actually helping him to stop thinking about his own for a bit.

"Naw, don' 'polagize. Y-Y' just looked awful like--like summun I used ta' know. I didn' mean tae trubble ye."

The older elf gave Raf another small smile, which made his cheeks feel rather odd since he hadn’t smiled much for a very long time. “You haven’t troubled me at all, do not worry. I’m Korendil…you are?” Kory asked, feeling rather odd speaking this much and so normally with someone. For so long, his vocabulary had mainly consisted of ‘yes sir’; his captors hadn’t exactly been having cheerful conversations with him. I wonder if it is a good thing or a bad thing that I remind him of someone. He does look quite a bit like my people. I wonder if his family is from my city.

"Raf, Rafaedel Birchbeam."

Kory felt the corners of his mouth turning up again as the boy seemed to breathe a bit easier thanks to the distance Korendil put between them. "Nice to meet you. Do you wish to be called Raf or Rafaedel?" he asked, more life seeming to come back to him the more he talked with the younger elf. Something about talking to Raf made him feel more like his old self. Whether it was the fact that he didn’t need to fear the child- which was a huge blessing- or that it reminded him of his old life, Korendil wasn’t sure, but he was very thankful for the boy's appearance.

After a moment of thought, Korendil decided he wouldn’t mind the boy calling him by his own nickname. “My...family and friends call me Kory..." he said, faltering just a hair as a spark of pain flashed through his eyes at the mention of his friends and family before he covered it up. It still hurt so very badly to think of them, he missed them all greatly. He didn’t know what had happened to them after he was taken. For all he knew, someone dear to him could have passed away, befallen a similar fate that he had, or something else just as bad. If he could, he wanted to return to them, but he didn’t have a clue which direction to go and after ten years of traveling, he had the bad feeling that they were so far from his city that it was unlikely that anyone would know about it.

“You can call me that if you want. But please, no ‘sir’. It will be nice to hear my name again,” the elf offered, the last sentence coming out very quietly as though he had been saying it to himself more than to Raf. Except for the few times it had been said since Racia helped him, Kory hadn’t heard his name much over the past ten years. The bandits either called him elf or unpleasant names; he didn’t think they even knew his actual one. The only one who had used his name was the boss and Korendil really would have preferred the beast just used the names his men used. Every time the lizard said his name, it made Kory shiver. The way the creature said it left him feeling dirty.

"Sor--Korendil-- you was a slave, wasn't you?"

The blunt question surprised Korendil a bit, but he didn’t blame Raf for asking. Children were curious things and, unfortunately, he had the feeling- from the boy’s tone- that slavery might be the thing they had in common. The elf reached up and rested his fingertips gently on his collar as his eyelids drooped sadly. “Y-yes I am…was. I…believe I am free now,” he answered slowly, a bit of disbelief still hanging in his voice, showing that even now he wasn’t positive this wasn’t just another trap. Kory wondered if he should ask Raf the same question. Perhaps the kid needed to talk about it, but then perhaps he did not. They just met and while confiding with a child was one thing, a child confiding with an adult was another thing. It took a lot more trust on the youngling’s part and Kory highly doubted he had that trust. “I’m hoping to get these off soon,” he said as his gaze moved to the iron bands around his wrists.

ooc: do you read Mercedes Lackey books?

Kory almost chuckled as he listened to the boy's speech. A few years ago he probably wouldnt have been able to understand much of that. Where he was from, children were taught to speak clearly and correctly from the moment they began to speak. It was only the very low ranking children that spoke like that; the ones whose families were poor and uneducated. He had not been permitted to associate with those children when he was little, so it wasnt until later on in life that he even heard someone speak like that.

It hadnt been until he met the bandits that he learned to understand poor language. A majority of the bandits were the least intelligent creatures he had ever met and spoke much worse than Raf. The rest either had a decent amount of education- that still left them with the accent- or just grunted and pointed when they wanted to communicate. The only one with an ounce of intellect was the leader, which was to be expected. The leader of groups like that had to be smart, or they wouldnt last long.

However, Kory did not associate Raf's street rat accent with his intelligence. The young elf didnt seem stupid in any way; it was most likely due to the fact that he probably had very few chances to learn during his past. Well Raf's speech didnt bother him in any way and Kory certainly didnt want the kid to get angry because he mentioned it. "I'm glad to hear that. I hope someone will be able to help me with these," he said, though he couldnt help but feel a bit of worry that nobody would be able to get his collar off of him.

While the bands on his wrists were normal manacles, the collar around his neck was different. It wasnt made of any metal he had seen before and it canceled any magic used on it. The only way to get it off would be to pick the lock and Kory wasnt even sure there was one. When he ran his hand over the back, it felt smooth except for a very small hole. He had tried picking it with whatever long, small thing he had come across, but hadnt been successful. He had the sinking feeling it wouldnt come off without the right kind of key.

"Who is L'Nanu?" Korendil asked, not knowing any of the village's inhabitants besides the two in the room with him right now.

Korendil relaxed just a hair as Raf said he lived with the leader of the group. Considering how skittish the boy was, he took it as a good sign that the leader appeared to have gained his trust. Odd as it may seem to another that he trusted the opinion of a child more than the opinion of the person who saved him, he did. A part of him wanted very badly to be able to trust Racia, she had risked her life to help him and had guided him here without his senses ever sensing an actual trap, but it was difficult. She worked for the village; it could all be an act on her part. Raf, on the other hand, was someone who was brought here like he was and who seemed to think a great deal like he did. While Kory was a bit more willing to trust people, he was still looking for traps, for catches, and for people planning to use him; a similar feeling he had picked up from the boy. It didn’t mean Kory was instantly going to trust this leader, but if Raf did, this Lenanu just got a step closer to gaining it.

"wouldja--d'yeh want me t' take a lookit them locks? Th' wrist-binders at least I think I kin get offa ya in a jiff. I'm a right good lock-pick."

Kory’s chest tightened at the offer, not in worry but because it filled him with such a longing it almost hurt. He tried not to show it, but he desperately wanted those manacles off. Even though he was free, they still marked him as a slave and could still be used against him. If anyone here wished to take him, their job would already be half done for them. All they would need to do was pull a rope or chain through the loops on his cuffs and he would be theirs. It was like putting a wild dog in a cage. One could leave the door open, giving it freedom, but all someone would have to do was shut the door and it would be trapped once again. The thought of being caught again terrified him. If they were off, he would be one more step closer to true freedom.
“Y-you would do that? Yes, thank you Raf. I would be beyond grateful,” the elf responded, his voice quiet and sincere. There was a bit of doubt in him that the child could pick the lock, but it couldn’t hurt to try and he could easily be proven wrong. What surprised him was that Raf offered. The boy had been avoiding contact with him- even when Kory handed the carrot back- and had been even more nervous earlier until Kory lengthened the distance between them. Yet here he was offering to get close enough to him to pick the locks on his wrist. That would include contact and being near each other. I hope that is a good sign, Korendil thought.
ooc: Lackey nut too obviously lol nope I havent read that short story, I will have to go do that

Kory gave Raf a small smile. At the moment, it felt oddly like the tables had been turned, that he was the child being taken care of by the adult. It was rather unnerving; simply because of how serious the boy was acting. It wasn’t fair that a child had to deal with things like slavery. It was odd that he felt that way now. Up until he was taken, he never thought about how slaves felt. His family had owned human slaves like the rest of the elves in his city with enough money. Korendil had seen them, had spoken to them, had given them orders every day and had never thought about how their lives were. It made him feel horrible now that he realized how wrong it was for one intelligent creature to be owned and controlled by another.

The only consolation he had was that his family treated their slaves well. They had made their lives rather comfortable, had tried to keep families together, and hadn’t asked too much of them. Even if they had still been slaves, controlled by the elves that owned them, they hadn’t led miserable lives. Kory hadn’t been so lucky and apparently neither had Raf. He wondered if the two of them would ever get over what they went through, though we worried more about Raf than himself. His slavery had only been during a small- to an elf- portion of his life. Kory was 203 yrs old; a decade was only a fraction of that. But how long had Raf been a slave? Most of his life? Would he be able to get over that?

“That we do Raf. If there is ever anything I can do in return, you have simply to ask,” Korendil responded. He would not have given the same offer to an adult so lightly, but he hoped that since Raf was young, he wouldn’t use that promise against him. The older elf watched as the boy pulled a flute from his pocket and played an odd little tune. For a moment, he was confused on what that had accomplished, but a booming bark followed by a very large dog a few minutes later answered his unspoken question. To say he was surprised when the dog dropped a pouch consisting of lock picks would be an understatement. Apparently the two were very close and the dog very intelligent to know from a song that he was to bring that.

Kory nodded, very glad that he had no reason to do anything against the two; he didn’t want to see how he would fair against a dog that size. At Raf’s request, he held out his wrists so the locks were up. “Do you want to sit down or anything rather than stand?” he asked, not knowing how long it would take to pick the lock; he knew nothing about it after all.

Korendil nodded and walked over to the closest chair. Hoping Racia wouldn’t mind him sitting down, he pulled it so it was facing another chair- giving Raf the option to sit down as well if he wished- and sat down on the edge. He couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable sitting down on her clean chair with his dirty clothes. While he wasn’t covered in mud, he was coated with dirt. His clothes hadn’t been that clean before, hygiene was hardly a bandit gangs’ top priority, and after his escape, it was even worse. Kory had fallen on the ground numerous times and had been walking through a thick forest all day. Well if he ruined it, he would have to find a way to repay her.

Kory rested his arms on his knees so Raf would be able to get to them easily and was about to thank the boy again for at least trying, when the boy’s dog suddenly got up and walked toward him. The elf instantly tensed, Raf’s earlier words ringing in his head. Had he done something to appear as though he was a threat to the canine or to his master? It was a very large dog and he was exhausted and rather helpless at the moment. “Uh…Raf…” he said before his eyes widened in surprise as the dog licked his fingers and laid down beside him. He instantly relaxed and smiled.

“It seems I have done something to attract your friend,” Kory said. “He is beautiful and very well trained. How long have you had him?” he asked, trying to make conversation in hopes of keeping the boy relaxed around him.
Racia allowed them on their business as she started to polish her bow, lost in thought. Her eyes averted from the smooth wood to look at them every now and then with mild interest as she remained perched on the edge of her bed, rubbing oil over her bow and running her fingers along the string.
