Tortured Dreams (open to all)

Post by nightwindkurim »

Huh? Where am I? Nataku thought as his eyes slowly fluttered open. For a moment, the young elf thought his eyes were still closed, until he realized that what he thought were his eyelids, was in fact simple darkness, completely surrounding him. The darkness was not that of night, one could normally see pretty well with time even on the blackest of night, but like a shadow that covered everything. Even the ground beneath his feet looked the same as the air around him. If he hadn’t felt something solid below him, Nataku would have thought he was simply floating in nothingness. There was not a sound to be heard and not even a soft breeze touched his skin, nothing. The only thing he could see and feel was his own body and the only thing he could hear was his voice as he shouted to see if anybody was around to hear him.

The boy shivered as his call echoed around him and wrapped his arms around himself. Where was he? What was this place and how had he gotten there? The last thing he remembered was lying down to fall asleep. Was it a dream? It seemed so real it was hard to imagine that his mind was simply making it all up and if it was, why had his mind brought him to a place like this? It didn’t make any sense at all and it scared him. It made Nataku feel as though he were the only thing alive in the world, or that he had some how managed to walk into a trap. Could it be magic? Could someone have attacked him and done this?

“In a sense, yes.” The low voice that dripped with cruel amusement came from directly behind the young elf, but before he could turn around or jump away, Nataku felt strong arms wrap around him to hold him in place. “K-Kazuki…” he gasped, recognizing the voice instantly. Even as he turned his head to look over his shoulder, the elf knew what he would see if it truly was the mage standing behind him. The thing would look just like him, but older and taller with fangs like a vampire’s and dark, cruel eyes. He had seen the spirit’s reflection many times when Kazuki took over his body, the magic binding them together making his body change to fit the mage’s mind.

“W-what…h-h-how…?” Nataku stammered as he simply stood there in shock. This had never happened before, what was going on, how was Kazuki there while he was there? Kazuki chuckled. He could hear all the boy’s thoughts in his head like always and he could feel the child’s fear beginning to grow. The elf was terrified of him even when all they shared was a mind a body; when he couldn’t actually do anything to the boy. No doubt the fact that he was now standing behind Nataku was scaring the elf to no end.

“How am I here while you’re here?” Kazuki asked, repeating Nataku’s thoughts as he leaned over so he was speaking beside the elf’s ear. “Well my dear boy, I had a thought earlier as you fell asleep. If the two of us share a mind, what keeps us apart when we dream? Then it came to me. Nothing was separating us; we simply had never tried to enter the other’s mind during this state. Well guess what, I tried it.” Nataku bit his lip, the man’s smirk practically radiating around them. “Now I know what you are thinking. This is simply a dream. It isn’t real and nothing that happens to you in here will matter. Well then, tell me this. Can you feel this?” the mage asked as he tightened his grip, crushing the elf just slightly in his arms. A gasp and a whimper from his victim answered his question. “Though dreams are not real, while we are in them, everything is real until we awaken.”

Nataku shook as he just stood there, his eyes staring in shock at the nothingness in front of him. He had always feared what would happen if Kazuki somehow got a body of his own and now he was living that fear even though the actual thing had yet to happen. The being who had killed and tortured hundreds of other creatures, had him in his dreams and Kazuki was right, it all felt frighteningly real. The pain of the mage’s grip, the breath on his ear as the man spoke, the tightening of his chest as his fear grew…all of it felt as real as if he were awake.

Kazuki’s smirk widened. “Do you know how long I have wanted to meet you like this, to get even for all the times you stopped me in mid kill by taking over or by passing by a perfectly good opportunity for some fun while in control? Years my friend and guess what, now I have you, isn’t it great? And for the next couple of hours before you wake up…you’re mine…….”

***********
A small whimper of pain and fear came from the young elf that lay on the ground beside the river as the creature tossed and turned. Beads of sweat rolled down the side of his face as his eyes closed even tighter. The expression on the teen’s face spoke of pain and fear and showed that he was having anything but peaceful dreams, though his body refused to awaken and pull him from his torture. Whether that was from exhaustion or because the spirit inside of him was making it so was known only to the mage inside him.

Slayer hovered in the darkness beside the river, his pale silver eyes watching the young elf coldly, with the keen sharpness of a predator.

The wyrm had taken up temporary residence on this side of the river, when really he was a rolling stone, moving restlessly around the forest and mountains, seeming to search for something that was not there.

The elf whimpered, and Slayer could see that he was having a dandy of a nightmare. So, to relieve the creature of it's torment, Slayer took one step to the elf, bent, and very gently nudged him in the ribs.

His voice was like distance bass thunder.

"Wake now and worry not."

With a cry of pain, Nataku landed on what seemed to be the floor of the darkness as he cradled his arm against his chest. A large burn in the shape of a hand still sizzled on the skin around his wrist, the pain causing tears to well in the young elf’s eyes as he curled up in a ball. He had a similar burn on his cheek though that was one less severe, though no less painful. Another whimper crept through his lips and silent sobs shook his shoulders though he continued to simply lie there, his mind so overwhelmed with shock that he didn’t even think about using his own powers to help himself against the madman. Though a part of him wanted to beg Kazuki to stop, Nataku knew it was no use. Mercy was something the man had never shown before and the elf doubted pleading would change that now.

Kazuki sauntered over to the boy as he dissipated the flames that covered the hand that had grabbed the elf’s wrist. The mage couldn’t help but grin and smirk; he was having too much fun. This was what he lived for. It was the kind of thing he had done since the moment he had gained control of his powers so many decades ago. It was also what had caused him to be attacked and have his soul trapped inside the necklace the boy was wearing, but he wasn’t going to think about that now; the thought would only ruin this joyous event.

“Does it hurt?” he asked with a laugh as he leaned over Nataku, absolutely relishing in the fear shining in those innocent eyes. “I do hope it does, it just isn’t fun otherwise. I’m loving your screams by the way, they just send shivers right up my spine. Man I wish I had figured out that I could do this before now.” With another laugh, Kazuki roughly pushed Nataku onto his back with his foot and began slowly putting his weight on the boy’s stomach. The elf’s eyes widened and a small squeak of surprise burst from his lips as he grabbed the mage’s leg to try to wrench it off while scrambling to get out from beneath it. The sight just made the spirit smile more. “You are interesting to watch,” Kazuki commented as he added more weight. “I’ve never been able to see your face before, only feel your anguish and hear your pleas for my victims. I like this. You make such wonderful ex-pression of terror. And think, we’ll get to do this every—“

"Wake now and worry not."

Both head’s turned to look up as the voice resounded through the darkness, sounding very quiet at first, though gradually gathering in strength as it echoed around them. Kazuki’s lip curled up in a snarl as he cursed. “Damnit, who the hell is getting in the way? Who dares disturb my fun?” he growled, looking up for a moment before returning his attention to his prisoner, who almost whimpered again at the look in the mage’s eyes. Kazuki’s eyes shone with anything but sanity, but as he started to attack Nataku again, the elf felt something starting to take his mind from this place and quickly tried with all his might to wake up as Kazuki’s hand, aflame once more, rushed toward him…

***************
For a few more moments, the elf continued to roll around as though struggling against something before Nataku sat up like he had been struck by lightning, fully awake one moment after being completely out the moment before. He gasped as he struck out at the creature beside him, his mind instantly believing the thing to be Kazuki about to strike him once more. Golden eyes looked around wildly as his chest rose rapidly despite his attempts to slow it and calm himself as his mind slowly started to return. Damn it, that wasn’t nearly as long as I wanted it to be, Kazuki said in the back of his mind, the tone of his voice making him sound so much like a child that hadn’t gotten what he wanted that Nataku might have laughed had he not been so terrified. “W-what…?” the boy breathed as he looked around. It took him a moment to realize that he was no longer in the darkness of his dreams, but once more by the river he had gone to sleep by. “Who-?” he wondered, vaguely remembering a voice helping to wake him from his nightmare.

Slayer gave a rolling snort as the boy lashed fruitlessly against his foreclaw, but he waited until the boy had gathered his good sense and wits back. As soon as he was looking around and asking questions, the seventy foot wyrm spoke.

"That must have been one hell of a dream you had there kid," he said.

Nataku rubbed his eyes with the heels of his palms as he took multiple deep breaths in a row to try to calm his rapidly beating heart. Though his dreams normally gradually faded from his memory once he awoke, it was not the case with this one. When he closed his eyes, he could see Kazuki’s face in front of him, smirking down at him as the mage prepared to strike him again. He could even still feel the scorched skin on his arm and face…With a gasp, Nataku opened his eyes and looked down at his wrist before reaching up to feel his cheek. With a sigh of relief he relaxed…until he turned his head to look at the creature that had spoken to him. A small squeak escaped before he pursed his lips when he realized that not only was Slayer not attacking or appearing to pose any threat at the moment, but that he was also being incredibly rude to the creature who most likely was the one who had helped wake him up.

"That must have been one hell of a dream you had there kid,"

Nataku flushed and ducked his head in embarrassment so his bangs helped to cover his eyes. “Uh…it…it w-wasn’t th-that bad,” he stammered, not wanting to think about it even though he had the feeling it would be on his mind for some time. Why don’t you stammer some more, I am sure he’ll believe you then, Kazuki said with a snort of amusement. The spirit’s voice brought Nataku back to his nightmare and he couldn’t help but shudder. ‘We’ll get to do this every night….’ The words echoed in his head. Would Kazuki be able to do that every night? Would he have to go through that torture whenever he fell asleep?

Well I might let you get a good night’s rest occasionally simply because I cant have that body be worn out when I use it, but I am going to have my fun with you. “Thank you for-for waking me sir,” Nataku said to Slayer as he tried to ignore the voice in his head. The creature would never know just how grateful he was for bringing him out of that nightmare.

Slayer raised his brows. The boy had said the dream hadn't been that bad.
Nataku felt his cheeks burn even more at Slayer’s comment about him crying out in his sleep. He hadn’t been aware that he was doing that, though it made sense; he had to be doing something to cause the creature to feel the need to wake him. That didn’t make it any less embarrassing though. It wasn’t news to him- or the spirit inside him as Kazuki liked to remind him quite often- that he was anything but strong. Nataku knew that he cried more than a boy his age should and that practically everything scared him, but the knowledge didn’t make it any easier to deal with, especially when others saw it. It was bad enough that Kazuki gave him a hard time about it almost twenty-four seven.

“I…” The boy faltered and swallowed. What could he say? Even if he could get up the nerve to talk about what he had dreamed, how could he explain it without telling the wyrm that he was possessed? It wasn’t something that was really accepted by creatures and though he would occasionally warn others so that they wouldn’t be around to be harmed when Kazuki took over, he still feared being hurt by those who might think getting rid of the young elf might solve the problem quite well. He was only thirteen; he couldn’t help but be scared at the thought of dying.

“I…” he tried again. “Thank you but…I don’t know if I can,” he finally got out as he pulled his legs up to his chest and rested his chin on his knees. “Why do you want to help?” The question was blurted out before Nataku could hold his tongue. After so long of being in the company of Kazuki, he had a hard time believing someone would be willing to help him with anything. The elf could feel the spirit’s glee in his mind, no doubt reading his thoughts like the mage always did and finding his impact on the boy to be delightful.

Why did Slayer want to help? Because he was in a particularly good mood, actually quite sociable now compared to his moody and ferocious other self.

He sat down on the bank and dug in his foot claws, the giant curving talons digging deep into the river bank. He still made the little boy look like a bug size-wise, but at least now he only towered by 35 feet instead of 70. He turned a serious eye upon the boy.

"Because I lived a nightmare most of my early life. Things in dream are not so hard to talk about as those that happened in the flesh. Or are they?" he asked philisophically.

"Is there something about this nightmare that... results in fleshly pain?"

He had heard of creatures that possessed a victim to drive it insane, then when it became useless they moved on. A wyrm was naturally so ferocious regarding free will, they were immune to that, but it didn't mean other creatures, least of all young ones, had that same ability.

Nataku was grateful that Slayer sat down. Even though the creature still towered over him and he still had to tilt his head back a bit to be able to look the creature in the eye- which was difficult on its own due to the fact that he was still a bit fearful of the wyrm- he didn’t have to strain his neck too much to gaze up at Slayer. He had never seen a creature that big before in his life and thanks to Kazuki, he had traveled a great deal and seen many things. However, for whatever reason, he wasn’t as scared of Slayer as he would have thought he would be. Usually any creature that looked like it posed a threat scared the life out of him but…maybe it was simply that the wyrm seemed a bit concerned that helped him push some of his fear down.

When Slayer commented about living a nightmare, Nataku couldn’t help but look down in discomfort. What he said would be true in most cases, but not so much in this one. Nataku had lived a nightmare as well for three years now; his dream nightmare had been an extension of the one he was in and had actually been worse than what he had endured so far. With the exception of the day his family had been attacked and killed, he hadn’t actually been hurt; he had simply had to watch as Kazuki used his body to slaughter others. In the dream he had been the victim, not the viewer.

“I’m sorry…for whatever you went through,” Nataku said softly and he meant it. One of the reasons Kazuki got so much joy out of torturing other creatures was because the elf hated it so much when others were in pain. “And n-no…this one didn’t cause damage to…to my flesh but it wasn’t like-like normal dreams. I don’t know how to explain…I’m not sure I can…talk about it…” Nataku sounded hesitant as he said that. Though he was scared of talking about, there was a part of him that wanted nothing more than to let it out and tell Slayer all about it.

Nataku’s lip began to tremble as kept his gaze fixed on the ground as he tried to hold back what wanted so badly to burst out. It was eating up at him, more than it ever had before. He wanted so badly to stop holding it inside, to tell someone what had happened before it drove him insane. The only one who knew was Kazuki, but the elf wasn’t about to turn to the demented spirit for comfort. Kazuki was the cause of most of his pain in the first place and Nataku knew nobody else would understand once they realized what kind of creature possessed his body. No doubt they would see him as the cursed being he was and blame him for the trouble his other half caused. Nataku believed he was to blame, why shouldn’t they? If he had been strong, he might have been able to drive out the mage, but he wasn’t strong…You are weak. You will never be rid of me, not until the day that I push you from your body permanently, Kazuki whispered gleefully.

“I…I cant tell you. You wouldn’t understand. E-even if I told you about it, you’d-you’d know about me an-and then you’d hate me, you’d blame me, you’d hurt me…just like him…” The elf’s voice faded away as tears rolled down his cheeks. Though he wanted to turn and run off before he could be asked anything more about his dream, Nataku couldn’t find the strength to do so. The dream and his emotions had left him exhausted and he simply could do nothing more but remain where he was. Soon it will be my time little one, and then we can finish your torture for the night. Leave me alone!” Nataku yelled as he gripped his hair almost painfully. His eyes widened and stared at the ground between him and Slayer as though it was the thing assaulting his mind.

Nataku’s gaze shot up from the ground as Slayer placed his claws on either side of the young elf. When the wyrm leaned over him, the boy’s mouth fell open and he paled to a very milky white. The creature had seemed huge before, but with him looming over Nataku like he was, the elf realized just how incredibly small he was in comparison. The top of his head didn’t even reach the dragon’s chest; he might as well have been a mouse trying to face a lion. Though over the last few moments the size difference hadn’t bothered him, the movement brought his initial fear of Slayer back tenfold. He stepped back to put more room between them and almost slipped on some loose rocks behind him.

"You are not in your right mind. I think we should find you help."

“I’m not insane!” Nataku protested as he wiped his eyes on his sleeves. Even though a few tears continued to fall, he managed to actually make eye contact with Slayer, his anger and indignantly overpowering his fear a bit. He was not crazy and he didn’t need the kind of help the creature was suggesting…well maybe not. The point was, whether he needed to talk to someone or not, Nataku didn’t like people thinking he had lost his mind when he hadn’t; that was the last thing he wanted or needed. “Y-you don’t know anything about me…y-you have n-no right to say that…” he added quietly.

"Perhaps...an exorcism of sorts is needed."

The elf’s eyes widened in surprise at the wyrm’s very accurate guess, however his surprise was not the only reason his eyes widened. Though it shocked him to have someone actually figure out what was wrong with him, it was the least of his worries. At the mention of an exorcism, Kazuki’s push against his mind instantly strengthened. The mage did not at all like the sound of that. Though he longed for the day when he would no longer share Nataku’s body, exorcism was not how he wanted it to go. There was no way for him to know what would happen to his spirit if that happened; he was still connected to the necklace the boy wore. The exorcism would most likely trap him within it once more and he would be stuck inside it until he managed to entice someone else to take it.

Nataku gasped as he felt the all too familiar sensation of his mind losing control of his body. His pupils turned to slits before flames surrounded him. There is no way I am allowing that! Kazuki thought as he pushed Nataku to the back of their mind and took over. After a few moments, the fire disappeared with a small puff of smoke and in place of the young boy, a man stood on the ground between the wyrm’s legs. He looked exactly like Nataku, but taller and older with eyes that held none of the boy’s innocence. “Excuse me, but I have to say I don’t like what you are suggesting,” he said, eyes narrowing dangerously.

Slayer stared at the older man for a long long silence. A silence that was so heavy it could be felt, and Slayer knew his suspicions to be correct. On all fours like he was, the man that had taken the place of the boy stood less than the height of his smallest finger, and Slayers silver eyes bored fearlessly into those of Kazuki...except Slayers were beginning to show the dangerous side of a mind still solidly bent-set against evils and slavers.

“Excuse me, but I have to say I don’t like what you are suggesting,” he said.

Slayer continued to stare, until a low rumble could begin to be heard, deep in his chest, and then the wild mocking laughter of wyrm not even close to being impressed.

His thunderous voice rang out in the trees and over the river, and shook the very air, until it suddenly stopped. Just like that. And Slayer put his face right up to Kazuki.

"I can't help that can I?"

A charge seemed to gather in the air.

Kazuki looked fearlessly up at the wrym, the difference in sizes not even fazing him. The mage had never cared whether he was smaller than another creature. Fact was, he had been a human and was now an elf like creature; both bodies tended to be smaller than most beings out in the world that would pose a threat. However, before all this, he had been so powerful size and numbers never made a difference to him. Kazuki could remember countless times when he had faced groups that outnumbered him or creatures ten times or more his size and had defeated them. Size didn’t matter when one had power, though it made a big difference when one did not. His host was a prime example.

As Slayer’s laugher rang around them, Kazuki began examining his fingernails in boredom. Though the mockery did irritate him, he wasn’t going to show it to the creature. It shouldn’t matter to him what the being thought anyway. The only reason he hadn’t killed the thing yet or turned and left was because he wanted to see if the creature actually planned on trying to either do an exorcism himself or find another to do it. He didn’t plan on waiting long though; he had his threat to Nataku to carry out.

“Quite finished?” the mage asked as he crossed his arm over his chest and looked Slayer in the eyes, well eye technically since the creature was so large he could only look at one at a time. “Now whether you can help it or not is up to you. You can mind your own damn business or you can continue to meddle. Personally, I would suggest the former,” Kazuki added with a smirk. He could feel the tension and charge in the air. His right hand tightened into a claw as he prepared himself to use his gift if he needed to. Quite frankly, he didn’t want to waste time with this guy. Torturing defenseless, nice, pretty things tended to hurt Nataku more than hurting something that fought back.

Electricity seemed to race up and down Slayers spine, as he saw his mockery irritate the mage. He got down in a sprawl of boredom, just as the mage examined his fingernails in like fashion. He spoke simple and directly, with a severe bluntness.

"What can you do?" he asked. "I meddle only when I see fit, and personally, I think you're a disgusting worm-type that needs to be burned...like a leech."

On the edges, something not alive and not dead stood watching the wyrm and the mage, as the tension in the air charged.

Void stood in it's human form, watching impassively as the two geared to battle mode, silently recording everything.

Kazuki could feel the electricity in the air that warned of a possible battle and couldn’t have been more thrilled. Besides torturing creatures and his host, there was nothing the mage liked better than a good battle. It was unfortunate that, since the day he possessed Nataku, he had found very few creatures that even posed a challenge to him. Most were just stupid beings who thought, because a couple of pathetic villagers were scared into submission because of their ‘power’, that they were the strongest things in the world next to the gods. It was laughable and he had loved to take them off their high and might stools and smash their faces, literally at times, into the ground until they wished that he would kill them.

Nataku shuddered at the thoughts going through the spirit’s part of their mind. Like Kazuki had done with him, he could hear and feel every emotion going through the mage’s mind and body, including his thoughts. There had been more disturbing thoughts over the years to be sure, but that didn’t make his present ones any less disconcerting. The elf wished that he could cut himself off from it, but he couldn’t. Kazuki could when Nataku was in control, but the spirit had more power than he did and knew more secrets about mindspeech and mindmagic. No matter how hard he tried, Nataku couldn’t put a barrier between them. Sometimes he would be able to cut off one sense, like sight or hearing, but that was all, which meant he always had to either watch or listen to what Kazuki was doing. Thankfully, they didn’t share the sense of touch so he didn’t have to feel it when Kazuki hit someone.

Kazuki tilted his head back and laughed. “Oh really? Funny that you should mention a worm getting burned…” he said with a smirk as fire started to slither up his arm like a snake. The flames radiated extreme heat, but didn’t affect him. Since they came from his body, they were a part of him and Kazuki could make them as hot as he wished and they would never burn him. As he mentally compared the flame’s movement to that of a serpent, the mage’ smirk widened and he made the fire form a cobra’s head as it came up over his shoulder. The snake hissed at the wyrm before striking out at Slayer’s eye.

Slayer smirked just as well, and as the fire snake suddenly struck at him, it encountered a shield barrier, that he had been privately forming around Kazuki. It was like a woven net, and it sparked with electricty, rebounding the powers upon the mage in ten fold force.

"You were saying?" he asked, and he idly played with lightning bolts, bouncing them back and forth between his claws.

Kazuki, though a bit surprised to find himself surrounded by a barrier, did nothing but raise an eyebrow as his flames were reflected and shot back at him. He could feel the increased power behind them, but let them engulf him rather than try to move away. Though the fire did feel a bit warmer than usual due to the wyrm’s magic, they still did nothing as they slid over his skin. The magic came from him and would not hurt him no matter how much another’s shield might change them. If the creature was hoping to destroy him with similar attacks, then this battle would be over before it began. Kazuki couldn’t be defeated, especially not by his own magic.

The mage made the flames circle around him for a few moments before they formed two orbs in his hands. Though the spirit was a bit disappointed that his little attack hadn’t worked- it would have been very amusing to see Slayer’s reaction if the flame snake had gotten the creature in the eye- he was hardly beaten. The attack hadn’t even been a real attack, it had been more of a test, to see if the large being was even capable of fighting off something so simple. Kazuki was actually glad that the wyrm had blocked it. He was looking for a good fight and someone who couldn’t dodge something so simple wouldn’t last against him for more than a moment.

"You were saying?"

Gold eyes followed the lightning bouncing between the wyrm’s claws with interest as thin lips formed a wide smirk. It seemed like this night might not be completely boring after all. “Hey Nataku,” he said aloud to his other half. Kazuki felt the boy’s apprehension; the child probably already guessed what he was about to say. “This creature is intriguing. Who knows, frying him might satisfy me enough to keep me from killing too many other creatures later. Would you like that? Think that might be a pretty good trade, his life for so many others’?” Nataku didn’t respond. What could he say? He didn’t want Kazuki to hurt Slayer, but he didn’t want the spirit to hurt a bunch of other creatures either. “He says he would rather you died,” the mage informed the wyrm, ignoring the young elf’s angry protests in the back of his mind. “So, let’s see what you’ve got.”
