Where do you go on vacation?
With summer vacation happening right now for (parts of) the northern hemisphere I'm wondering what everybody's idea of "going on vacation" is. For me it used to be go visit relatives on the other side of the ocean in Florida, but now that money is incredibly tight, just visiting friends in other (nearby) countries has replaced my vacations, like going to Belgium and Norway for a few days/weekend.
What do you do or where do you go?

Possibly Houston in the next month-ish-like-thing, definitely Philly and D.C. in November

He asked us: "Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!

Re: Where do you go on vacation?
Visiting family for the most part, either my family is Georgia, USA or some of Norv's extended family in Texas, USA. (Both are about 9-11 hours drive away).
As for fun vacations, if it's not to the mountains or something, it's often times just a simple "stay-cation." Those can be surprisingly fun. ^_^

I agree, you can do so much just staying home and enjoying not having to do anything! ^_^
As for vacations that don't involve visiting people...I always try to have a beach nearby, a beach just screams vacation to me
I love to swim in salty water.

Re: Where do you go on vacation?
I haven't really managed to get a proper vacation for a few years because of unsteady employment, but Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, and the area of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, have traditionally been my family's destinations when we get away. I've been aiming for Gatlinburg again lately, and hopefully I'll be able to go again some time soon, as heading out into the Smoky Mountains is extremely nostalgic for me.

I don't think we've hit mamoth caves before, but that would be a great place to check out. Gatlinburg is one of our favored spots as well, just wish had a bit more endurance to really enjoy the trails. We're working on it though

Re: Where do you go on vacation?
Mammoth Cave is a really interesting place. If you ever do go, I personally recommend the Historic Tour (if you're up for a fair bit of walking and one climb up a somewhat insanely tall set of stairs) and the Frozen Niagara Tour. At the least, you really should see Frozen Niagara.
And since we've both been to Gatlinburg, now I've got the funny notion that we might have passed each other sometime and never known...

Re: Where do you go on vacation?
Would be pretty interesting, eh? Nightwolf and I are in the general Nashville area so for mountains that's pretty much the most convenient place for us. Frozen Niagra does sound like it'd be a pretty nice tour, definitely will have to take some time off at some point to head up that direction.

This made me curious, what do you mean by this? Many steps? Narrow steps? Very vertical climb? I'm sort of imaging those creepy mayan temple steps right now.Luxon Cobrat wrote:climb up a somewhat insanely tall set of stairs

Oh good! So if/when you come to visit me, I can haul you to the top of Sulphur Mountain and only need to worry about one of us passing outLuxon Cobrat wrote:if you're up for a fair bit of walking and one climb up a somewhat insanely tall set of stairs...

Basically, the tour goes a few hundred feet underground inside the cave. (It is a really huge cave.) Instead of turning around and coming back out the way you went in, they make you climb up a really tall steel tower of stairs that takes you straight back up close to the entrance. It's kind of like a fire watch tower, but taller. A few hundred feet taller.
Edit: Actually, I'm not so sure if it's hundreds of feet, but it is pretty tall.
I won't pass out! I'll just... decide to take a nap. Because I want to.The_Vizir wrote: Oh good! So if/when you come to visit me, I can haul you to the top of Sulphur Mountain and only need to worry about one of us passing out

Re: Where do you go on vacation?
I recognize a few someones in that photo set. Also, Sulphur Mountain is an exciting moniker, and I am mildly jealous that I am not among those who have scaled it.
Re: the original post, I, uh, don't?
I think I like my jobs too much -- I just don't think to take time off for other adventures unless someone invites me somewhere! Family classics include camping and extended-family get-togethers in Indy, though, and I have visited a few different friends in other states/had them visit me.
