UV in the stars

Post by Lanadyr »

I was recently inspired to attempt an "alternate reality" space opera-type roleplay in which at least some of the inhabitants of Deep Forest are crew members on the spaceship D.F. Vision. Or something. I'm open to suggestions on the ship's name and lots of other details of the setting at this point. In fact, the whole point of this thread is to gauge possible interest in this endeavor before I sink a lot of time into R&D on the setting.

Obviously, this roleplay would be a VWO thread, which also means that any characters that wish to join can potentially be changed significantly to more appropriately fit into a sci-fi setting. Not that they have to be! If we've got to make the spaceship accommodate a bunch of quadrupeds and flyers and larger creatures and what-not, that would certainly make things more complicated than if everyone had two legs, two arms, used oxygen, and spoke English, but it's not like we'll have a special effects budget that will run out if we do too many complicated things. Besides, we all want to play our characters as we envision them, so it would probably be more enjoyable for everyone involved to have the characters, and the types of changes their respective players would like to make to them, drive setting development, rather than the other way around.

Two example characters, to get the creative juices flowing:

- Unless someone else really wants the job, Captain Orb will command the ship. She will be a Vitreum, a member of a silicon-based species of glassy shapeshifters. Her basic form will pretty much remain the same, though she'll be much less colorful/more transparent, and she'll be wearing a black, full-body jumpsuit instead of her typical clothing. She will also wear a voice translator around her neck to allow her commands to be clearly understood even in crisis situations. Her quarters will be littered with mysterious artifacts from previous missions (i.e. everything that would normally be in her rucksack). She is naturally inclined towards scientific exploration, diplomacy, and historical discovery, which will affect the character of her vessel's missions (i.e. no "bug hunts" targetting the belligerent Balraa Empire unless absolutely necessary).

- Head Damage Controller Bottle Court (presently still in a holding pattern in a joining thread, but that doesn't matter for VWO) is in charge of keeping the ship up and running, no matter what. Her appearance will be changed significantly from its default, because, in this setting, she will be composed of a haphazard mass of setting-appropriate technological trappings and no organic materials. Occasionally, the advanced technologies and artificial intelligences in this setting interact in unexpected ways and spontaneously produce sentient beings such as Bottle, which are collectively known as Helmonts to the other species. Bottle is nervously obsessed with keeping the ship running at optimal efficiency, and intuitively understands how to do as much, but this obsession with an efficient status quo also makes her reluctant to allow any changes to the vessel, no matter how necessary they may be. If the ship needs to have its longwave navigational array (LNA) modified to better chart the Boundary Nebula, then Controller Court will first need to be convinced of just how important the operation is.

So…any interest?

Yes, but I would probably want to steer Juno the hell away from this. Mostly because he'll try and become Captain or derail the plot. But it sounds fun. For some reason though I imagine Geava/Voice of Deep forest as the Ship's A.I.
