Games of Old

Post by Windra »

Kinda curious.

When you were growing up ... what video game did you latch yourself onto most often?

I had to do some digging for mine, because I loved it so, but it's been so long that I couldn't remember the name. But my mother got me a Super Nintendo game called Ignition Factor, where you played as a firefighter and had to save victims from a burning building with the use of three different fire extinguishers and a pole.

It made me really wanna become a firefighter for some time. :P

On the PC my big all time favourite as a kid was Loom ^_^ You play a 17 year old boy on this island inhabited by a guild of weavers, who then finds out his own background is more complex than he thought. His entire guild is then sucked up through some kind of weird portal, leaving him all alone with a magic staff. So he has to learn to use the magic of his guild through trial and error, while figuring out his own past, the secrets of his guild, and a way to get off the island. From there on he is faced with all kinds of challenges you have to figure out to save his life and ultimately solve the mystery. Loved it ^_^

On Atari I couldn't get enough of Frogger :lol

Icewind Dale...

Did anyone not see that coming? Anyone at all?

Okay, for those not in the know - Icewind Dale was an old Black Isle Infinity Engine game - same as Baldur's Gate - that simulated a 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragon campaign, taking place in the Icewind Dale region of Faerun in the Forgotten Realms setting. And it was GLORIOUS. :grin

The Cluefinders were my life. xD

There was a PC adventure for each grade, from 3rd to 6th. They were rather fun storylines involving mystery, journeys, and exploration. They were also pretty educational. You couldn't advance anywhere without solving math/reading/science/whatever problems.

I'm really curious how this would be done! Really something subtle where you don't really notice you're doing these things because it's integrated into the storyline, or more along the lines of "now answer this question and you may advance"?

You had to deal with fractions to build the right things, put timeline events in order to mend bridges and other sorts of stuff, and sometimes answer a couple questions about a reading excerpt to open doors. There were simple things too, like solving geometric puzzles or finding patterns.

Too many to count. I think I'll start off with the oldest one I remember: Super Solvers: Treasure mountain. I remember playing that thing on an old green colored CRT and having to use the big 8 inch floppy disks to move to the next content. It was a little odd, in reterospect, being three years old and knowing how to read full sentences and do simple multiplication.

After that is was the Lost Island of DR Brain, followed by the Castle of Dr Brain, then Lost Mind of Dr Brain, then Lost in time with Dr Brain.

There was Island of the Zombinis.

Loom (beat that, left on a cliffhanger. Did not expect a Dragon to have a Cockney accent), Dig (read the book to figure out how to solve parts of it), Monkey Island series (Hi moon logic!)

Myst series. (The trilogy, the last three still don't count with me.)

Connections (I loved this one. Running around a multiverse using the random jumble of time objects to create links in order to escape into the next world before the one you're in collapsed due to the forces of Chaos.)

Legends of the Oracle.

Journeyman Project III (That one was interesting, mostly because your "Hint" button was a voiced by a professional comedian pretending to be Genie from Aladdin. Turns out it worked.)

As for Cluefinders. I played them all when I reached the right age level that they were meant for. Escaping from a "haunted" carnival, solving a "yeti" infestation in Tibet, running around Egypt... the one I remember the most was the one involving a trip to a mysterious island that only pops up every once in a while. It had a history of several abandoned colonies throughout the ages and tons of random sinkholes as if it was trying to eat people. Turns out the whole island, having sentient aquatic life (Measuring game), a talking submarine (Circuitry/pathway figuring), animal sustainability predictions... turned out to be a gigantic plot for aliens to harvest brains.

Yes, someone who played it! =D

Oooo yes, I played the haunted Carnival, as well as all the grade-oriented ones... except for the 5th.

Sounds creepy! ...but I'm sure I would have enjoyed it. Too bad these things don't work on newer computers. xD

I remember playing some computer games back when we got the first computer. But I have absolutely no idea what those games were called. One game I've tried to dig out the name for before but with no luck.

The clearest one I can remember is some kind of fighter-jet game in the 90ies, it had quite good graphics and you could steer this fighter jet to take out military in a quite open world. I think you also had a small "enemy-map" of some kind. There was awesome music playing all the time and it was a difficult game. The end boss completely differed from the military you'd been taking out earlier, it was some kind of gigantic snake. And I NEVER managed to defeat the end boss, it was hard!

One of the first games I ever played on a computer was much older than the one I just told you about, it was black and white, very two dimensional and involved some kind of aiming and shooting (kinda like angry birds) at a gorilla, I think it was. Not 100% sure though. I have very vague memories of this one.

Hahaha, almost sounds like Donkey Kong meets Angry Birds. xD

My dad used to play these PC games where you had to play a young soldier in a war and eventually work your way up to higher ranks/survive the whole thing.

I remember sneaking on to try it once, panicking at the controls, and dying rather fast. :P aaand there's my youngest computer game memory.

... He also played virtual hunting ones too. I was a major Bambi fan at the time and often probably annoyed him with how much I begged him to not shoot the deer!

Oh, here's one.

E.V.O. Search for Eden

You basically started at the beginning of time, devouring other creatures in order to gain points that could be used to evolve certain parts of your body for your own benefit, and in different ways.
