Knurlan Gnarl

Post by ImogenArcher »

Name:
Knurlan Gnarl/Pet: Isidore

Species:
Dwarf/Pet: Basilisk

Gender:
Male/Pet: Male

Alliance:
Good/Pet: Same as masters

Age:
36/Pet: 1000

Human Age Equivalency:
36/Pet: 1000

Mature Adult at Age:
12/Pet: 170

Appearance:
A short, stocky dwarf. At a height of 4'5" he weighs 150 lbs. He has large arm muscles. Long, orange, straight hair reaching his shoulders. A long orange beard, hanging straight, down to his stomach. A medium size nose. Bushy eyebrows, black colored. Light brown eyes. Small round ears hidden under his hair. Legs that are short for a dwarf, and not very impressive muscle wise. He wears a dark brown tunic and black trousers. He wears nothing on his feet, which are covered with black hair and calloused. He carries a war hammer across his back, the head at his left shoulder, and the tip of the handle near the bottom of his right buttocks. He also carries a large shield. The shield is made of steel, three feet in diameter, effectively covering most of his body if he holds it up. The shield is convex, for effective deflection of attacks, and undecorated.

Image

Pet: Looks like a large, eight legged lizard. Bluish green scales. Two times the dwarfs size tall, around 8'10". About 15' long from nose to tail. The tail is straight and scaly, just like the rest of his body. Small fin like spikes on both sides of the back of his yellow eyes.

Image

Personality:
Usually jolly. Very sarcastic, always making smart remarks. While seeming trusting, he actually hides his emotions, very untrusting of others, and his hidden emotions, and sarcastic remarks hide the fact that he is not OK very well.

Pet: Grumpy for the most part. Listens to everything his master tells him, doing whatever he says. Protective of his master, but only if he sees he is in danger.

Abilities:
Strong, but only with his arms. Skilled in combat, able to defeat most foes by just swinging his hammer through any defense that most have. He is also quick witted and cool tempered, being able to think in most situations.

Pet: Being large, he is also strong as well as fast. Being able to use his jaws, claws, and tail in a fight, although most of the time choosing not to. Instead, he usually uses his ability, which all basilisks can do, of turning his enemies to stone. He can do so by making eye contact with his enemies.

Disadvantages:
Not very tactical during a fight, usually just swinging his hammer around wildly, and using his shield when necessary. Not very fast, agile, or graceful. Always has a smart remark, which doesn't allow him to make friends easily. If he does make a friend, he is untrusting, and doesn't allow people to get close very easily. Knurlan doesn't like math, although he loves puzzles.

Pet: Like his master, he isn't very tactical. Instead of using his strength or speed, he tends to rely on his eyes, using them to turn others to stone, waiting long periods until his enemy looks him in the eye. Doing as his master told him, he walks around with his head down, not looking at people, not even if they are being hostile. Also very susceptible to blades. If he is hit with a sharp edge, it usually goes down twice as far as if swung at a human. Also, the fins behind both of his eyes are sensitive to touch, and easy to bring to pain, disabling the creature if tugged. Basilisks can not talk.

Family:
Kiro Gnarl (Father) Dead
Shila Gnarl (Mother) Dead
Thira Gnarl (Sister, two years older) Dead

History:
Living in a cave, somewhere across the opposite end of the wasteland, he lives with his father, mother, and sister. His father was a great warrior. Always being able to defend the family against the monsters of the outside world, killing them all with his war hammer. He had a wonderful mother. She always made good food, and helped Knurlan whenever he was in trouble. His sister was great too. Always taking time out of her schedule to play with Knurlan, or help him with whatever he needed.

One day, when Knurlan was twelve, he was out practicing combat with his father, using wooden war hammers. They were out for several hours, practicing hard.

When they had returned home, they came back to two stone figures. Knurlan's mother and sister had been turned to stone by a basilisk. Knurlan's father told him to stay here, avoiding eye contact with any beasts that come by.

After a few hours of being gone, Knurlan became worried, so he left the cave to look for his father. After searching for a few minutes he saw his father fighting the beast. Kiro saw his son, and then became distracted, looking the beast in the eye for a second, and becoming frozen in stone, never to be undone.

Knurlan, becoming enraged, rushed at the behemoth, eyes full of tears. The behemoth just looked at him, this child running at him, screaming. Knurlan reached the beast and began beating the beast's leg in a futile attempt to destroy it. All the beast did was stare at his eyes, willing him to look at him.

After calming down a little, he could think a little bit clearer. He decided to attack his head. Knurlan climbed the beast and sat on his head, beating uselessly at his head and trying to tear at his eyes, pulling his fins.

As Knurlan pulled the beasts fins it gave a great roar, stopping it in it's track. Knurlan, realizing the beasts weakness, continued to pull at the fins until the beast came falling. Presuming the beast dead, Knurlan went back home, grabbing his fathers hammer and shield before doing so. What do I do now, thought the dwarf thought.

Not wanting to stay here, the pain to great, Knurlan decided to wander the wilderness to become strong, like his father. Leaving, he headed South, traveling for several days. After waking up one night, he saw the basilisk standing above him with his head bowed, as if in submission. Knurlan, in a panic, looked at the beast in the eyes. Lucky him the beast had its head bowed.

"Don't make me hurt you again," Said Knurlan.

The beast just stood there, head bowed.

"What's wrong with you, haven't you learned your lesson yet?" Asked Knurlan, disappointed in the lack of response.

Knurlan began walking, planning on ignoring the beast, but the beast followed. Whenever Knurlan tried to leave the beast, it would follow. Even though the beast had killed his family, he didn't want to be alone, so he started speaking to the beast, learning that he understands him, but can't speak.

Knurlan named the beast Isidore.

After several years of traveling, the dwarf learned to ride Isidore, making him effectively faster. Since he left, he has been traveling around for 13 years. Three of which were in the wastelands. Traveling so long with the beast, Knurlan has learned how to communicate with the beast, understanding body motions, for the most part.

All these years and the only one Knurlan has gotten close to is Isidore. Knurlan developed his hiding his emotions traveling, sure that strong people don't have feelings on loneliness, isolation, fear, and unhappiness, since his father always seemed jolly, he decided to take up being jolly as well, always trying to lighten up a mood with a joke or sarcastic remark.

Anything Else We Need to Know?:
Nothing I can think of.

IC (In Character) Entrance:
After three long years of traveling the wasteland, looking for always scarce food, they spotted a forest up ahead. Guessing there were better living conditions in the forest, Knurlan told the Basilisk to speed along to the forest. After reaching the forest, the dwarf climbed down from Isidore, standing on the ground, admiring the shade and cool breeze.

Isidore snapped his head up, an indication that someone was near, but not necessarily hostile. Although Isidore snapped his head up, he was being careful not to make eye contact with anyone that walks closer. Knurlan, not being distressed, sat down saying,

"Maybe it's food."

"Food? I am not food. I would think not." Said a young female voice from above the dwarf and overgrown multilegged oversized lizard with a mean glare. Above the two was a young looking girl with very long hair, if it wasn't for the fact that she was sitting on a branch with her back to the tree itself, it would have reached to almost the ground with her standing at about 5ft. Her ears were like that of an elf's ears, though not as long, and barely poking out of her hair. The rest of her looked like what you would expect from a cute young human girl in her early teens. Other than the lack of a chest, she was rather flat compared to other. But her eyes were the real mystery as to what she was. The colors in her eyes were constly swirling, shifting, and changing. A never ending random chaos of colors.

"Hm, and another new person enters the forest. Plenty of newcomers this year. But, its a good time so far. Only a strange earthquake has gotten many worried. Myself included. Ah, listen to me talk! Being rude, my goddess will not forgive me for such a thing. I am the most powerful magician in the forest, the one and only powerful and great Lyrial Eailiolery! It is an honor to meet you. Now would be the past of this meeting that you introduce yourself." She said giving a rather warm and ernest smile.

A voice from above. Isidore doesn't make a move. Knurlan looks up to where the voice came from, saying,

"You are very sneaky little girl. The most powerful magician, you say? Well, I bet Isidore over here (Indicating the Basilisk) could determine that by examining those very odd eyes you have."

As he says this he laughs to himself, as the girl probably doesn't know what Isidore is capable of, like most people.

"You're not food? Well, maybe not for me, but Isidore could use some meat." Again chuckling to himself. "My name, little girl, is Knurlan Gnarl. You seem like an old resident of the forest, perhaps you know where we could get some food? And I do not like so much having to speak to someone way above me in the trees, why not come down? I promise I won't hurt you, and neither will Isidore, however scary he may seem."

((ooc: Could of swore I already posted a responce...I guess IE ate it up before it actually posted...sigh))

IC:
"A basilisk would never be able to turn me to stone. One to many tricks up my sleeve for that." Lyrial said jokingly. "Sure, I'll come down, since it seams to make you a little antsy to be talking to someone that is above you." Lyrial said, smiling inwardly at her own little pun. So she stood up on the branch and jumped off. She was wearing black jeans with white shoes and a white shirt under a black sleeveless summer coat. Most people would have found her cute, or even pretty. But that was usually a personal opinion, and was formed by each person individually as she met them.

She did not plumet towards the ground as one might have expected, instead, she slowly floated to the ground to land infront of the basilisk with her back to it. "I've seen scarier things than him. As far as food goes, there is plenty of game in the forest for him to hunt, otherwise, the Elf's Forest Village is the best place to get food. For both you and him. I myself don't live there, instead I like to move around in the forest. But I always go back when I need something or I want to bug someone. So, that would be the best place to head."

((ooc: Sorry for the short post, just wasn't really into retyping up something that was aten up))

(OOC Don't worry about it, I was wondering what took so long lol.)

IC:
The girl floated down in front of Isidore, landing with her back to him. Isidore didn't move. Knurlan normally would be nervous at such a strange girl, but he has seen stranger things, such as a basalisk. Keeping his cool he said,

"Sadly, Isidore isn't a good hunter, he turns all the game to stone. And there isn't much you can do to stop Isidore but not look at his eyes, haha." Only telling the girl about Isidore because she is small, and by what Knurlan has seen, bigger is better, "So you've seen a basalisk before? Or have you heard about them? Because there's no other way I can think of that you would know what Isidore can do."

"I'll leave Isidore here, so I don't unnerve the villagers. Why don't you show me where this village is, I'm sure your parents are worried.

To bad Knurlan would never be able to see Lyrial in her true form. Otherwise he would never have had to think that Isidore is a threat to her. Than again to a point, the basilisk ins't a threat to her, and he just didn't realize that. But even Lyrial had to agree that if she would be turned to stone, it wouldn't have been a good thing. Indeed, it would have taken a while for her own magic to turn her back to normal. But at the least she would turn back to normal.

"I have never heard of such an incompetent basilisk. From what I read about them they are really great hunters, for they typically can control their ability that turns creatures to stone. And Isidore is not a small basilisk, and is in fact quite big for his kind. Telling me that he was a good hunter at one point. So I wonder what changed that?" She said, thinking about it.

Knurlan told Isidore to stay and wait, which the Basilisk did, sitting, staring straight ahead, like a statue, as if he had himself, turned to stone. Knurlan began walking into the forest, talking to the young girl.

"Where are your parents, and why are you all the way out here by yourself? Maybe your parents are rich, and I can turn you in for a lot of cash," Knulan said, chuckling aloud. "And don't worry about Isidore. If he gets hungry he can eat the stone creatures he makes."

Not to worried about going in the wrong direction, taking off without the girl, Knurlan starts whistling a cheery tune on his stroll.

((ooc: Sorry for the wait))
IC:
Lyrial started to walk with the dwarf, ignoring the little joke about ransoming her. Not that sucha ploy would work, and that such thinking was dangerous to the one thinking about such things, it just really wasn't something that could be seriously done without taking in conscideration the dangers that she would pose to the kidnapper. Chances are, she would be the one capturing the wanabe kipnapper.

"My parents are dead, they died a long time ago, in a war. My parents were powerful warriors. It took about eight of the enemy's best to take just the two of them down, and even then, those eight died in the process of killing my parents. My brother is playing guard somewhere else, not in this forest. And my...grandmother...she is watching over me, always. And no, that doesn't mean that she is dead." Lyrial said as they walked.

"And while I may be living alone in the forest, that doesn't mean I am constantly in danger. I got lots of friends I can go to in case of things going sour. And of course, I have my magic to defend myself with." She said with a smirk.
