I've seen them before, like, down where it's showing who's online. And curiosity never settles well with me. What're those?

Re: Google and Yahoo Bots? (Al)
Lol the bots are pretty harmless and can't post, the problem is I think that the spam from today is from an actual person. >>; laaaaaaaame

Yes, I was online when it happened, started about 3:15am, and involved near every forum section... a regular SpamFest.

Re: Google and Yahoo Bots? (Al)
So I heard, I was far away from home when it happened. It was a "regular" poster though, yes. He's been banned now.
Anyway, to answer your original question, Toadie, those "bots" are just that, search engines (among others) scouring the interwebs to update their databases (Yahoo, Google...there's dozens and dozens more). phpBB groups them into these "usernames" to seperate them from spammers and the like, because these guys are harmless. ...that's the simple version anyway, there's probably more to it, lol.
EDIT: Here's the official description: “Bots”, “spiders” or “crawlers” are automated agents most commonly used by search engines to update their databases. Since they rarely make proper use of sessions they can distort visitor counts, increase load and sometimes fail to index sites correctly.
^_^
