WHOP!
Quite a sound effect. Ashowan would have laughed. Poor damned fish. The notion of something wide-eyed and flubbery being tossed in the air ... jeez, what did you think its last words were?
"I never should've eaten that plankton ... "
"Damn you, Salmon! DAMN YOU!"
"Farewell, cruel current!"
"Time to visit that big spawning pool in the sky ... "
Ashowan had a brief image of 'pimp fish' in her mind and burst out in hysterics. She was quick to restrain it, though, when the pescine went flying overhead. It vanished beyond the canopy. Nemo trailed after the shadow flickering in and out of view on the ground. Arms were stretched out before her, gloved fingers flexing with an itch to catch and prove Deen wrong. When the fish came crashing into the tightly woven leaves above, she grabbed at its tail. But the slipper beast slipped out of her grasp and was airborn again. Ashowan leapt for it, placing her hands together and turning her palms, fingers closed, towards the forest's vast roof. Fish Boi landed there, sloshing back and forth. Before it could wriggle and flail, she stuck a finger in its mouth and held the thing's upper lip firm - it couldn't escape now - then held it up for the Nisms to see.
"Fish?"
"Damn you, Salmon! DAMN YOU!"

Fly Fishing...
While Ashowan chased after the flying fish, Deen completed his butt-in-the-air leap, let his tail-swing momentum drag his butt over in a flip, so he could land feet-first... back in the River's current. The whole time, his eyes pasted firmly on Ashowan's movements, so he wouldn't miss a thing. Barely had his feet re-secured to River rocks, before he too burst out in mirth... Thoee, herself, unable to help it, a series of chittered giggles bursting from her throat in rapid-fire sequence, hands to snout, in an effort to hold them all in.
And then, the moment...
... Ashowan's oh so close to failure success, followed by her lifted-fishy presentation, and the single word...
... "Fish?" ...
... spoken in question.
Deen again cupped both hands to his muzzle, and shouted...
... "Well, it ain't a pigeon with fins!" ...
... in answer.
In further answer, Thoee got back to work, and sent several more fish Deen's way...
... Whop!
... Whop!
... Whop!
... each fish, delivered on a slightly variant path, one flipped end over end, one flying tail first, the last coming on sideways (and up-side down). Each fish, sent flying on a more direct path towards the Reaper, male Nism using a different, martial arts/ninjitsy move for each one. And a good bit of water displaced, following along with the fish.
Oh, and Thoee, careful to duck out of the way, each time......... *

Well, it ain't a pigeon with fins!" Deen yelled back with his muzzle cuffed.
Ashowan rolled her eyes, fighting the itch to comment ("No shit, Sherlock!"). Instead she turned towards her camp, hurriedly trotting over to grab something she forgot to snatch earlier: a large bucket. She grabbed it back from her home world of Earth many moons ago, shortly after torrential rains flooded out some of her stone closets and containers. The bucket had been used, then, to dump the excess fluid out. Now that the suns dried the land (and her belongings), it just kind of ... sat there, useless. Ashowan brought it back to life as a fish bucket. She dumped the live pescine in it and dragged the bucket off to where the majority of fish were being chucked at her. Just in time, too, for Thoee sent three more flying.
She dropped the bucket much to the fish's protest. Wasting not, Ashowan dove for the first two that were coming in dangerously low and close. One landed in each hand and it became a rather sloppy juggling act bound to amuse any witnesses. "Fish shlap!" she yelped when one jumped and tail-whipped her in the face. That one was dumped unceremoniously into the bucket, followed by the other. Licking fish-tasting fluid from her face, Ashowan prepared for the third ... and decided to heat things up a little.
In other words ... she turned, tensed ... and smashed the fish with her draconic tail hard enough to blast it (still in one piece) back at Thoee. For some reason, tennis popped in her head.
Just a 'fun' challenge.

Fish Toss...
Yes, indeed...
... Ashowan's juggling act amused both Deen and Thoee, and they clapped in appreciation. However...
... one poor fish was being "tossed" back!
Female Nism rose to the challenge, quite literally, since she had to jump...
... straight up, fish caught in her jaws, plucked from said jaws by a precise hand, swung low, released, and...
... swatted...
... Whop!! ...
... by a very sexy tail.
Well, Deen though his mate's tail looked sexy, and her twirl in the air before landing back in the River exposed quite a few other sexy aspects he admired about her body, however...
... cold water kept his normally heated passions thoroughly chilled.
Thoee's landing, like his, ended with equal precision, but four fish wouldn't be enough to feed the three of them, so...
... female Nism sent more fish screaming towards her male, and he whopped them onward to their designated destination...
... Ashowan!
Barring any further antics, the main course was ready for the barbie. If Ashowan didn't mind not having her catch cleaned......... *

Ashowan found herself likening Thoee’s jump-and-catch routine to the actions of a hungry sea lion. Any second now, she mused, the Nism would flap her tail, clap her hands together, and start doing … whatever the call of a sea lion was called. Nemo suppressed a laugh and sank low to the ground, crouched and tensed. The palms of her hands rested on the bucket’s lip; ready to hoist it up at a moment’s notice.
Thoee swung low. Fwoosh! screamed the rushing air around the poor water-dwelling beast. Ashowan lifted up the bucket, jumping backwards, holding the parcel above her head … and with a wet-sounding thump!, the fish was captured to be eaten later.
Grinning, Ashowan’s green eyes lowered to see what the Nisms were up to. Her mouth set into a round ‘o’ in both surprise and mock-horror when she realized that more fish were being sent her way. ”Holy hell,” she mumbled, breaking lax composure to bolt for the catch. Each one was captured with Ashowan stretching at some odd angle. The last fish landed with the Reaper posed in a crane stance, though that was just for show … and for humor’s sake.
When she was certain that no more prey was being sent her way, Ashowan lowered the bucket to get an eyeful. There was plenty enough to feed them all … and even seconds lingered inside. Ashowan released one arm and held a thumbs up for the two mates to see. ”We’ve more than enough fishies in here. Shall we call it?”

Cold Stones...
Poor Deen looked like a drowned mutant rat, and Thoee didn't look much better... all the splashing had left her fur quite soaked. But it hadn't taken away her dignity and grace. Deen, however, looked quite uncomfortable, shaking in an effort to shed water, hugging himself, arms crossed over his chest, hands patting his shoulders, in an effort to warm up. Thoee gave her mate a compassionate smile, then turned her attentions to Ashowan...
... "Yes, I believe we have enough...."
As she spoke, she moved through the water, step-hopped to shore, and shook herself as dry as possible...
... Deen, however, eager to leave the frigid River, made another slip-up on the riverbed rocks. Indeed, he took another dunking! And came up quicker than before, face in a teeth-chattered grimace, water flung everywhere in his haste. His first words, as he lept the last few feet to shore...
... "Hrrrrrrr! About time! Any longer, and I think I'd've frozen off my... *"
The male Nism looked down, and his tail drooped, as ears laid back...
... "Oh, shoot...."
In othe words, too late.
Nism males, in common with terrestrial mammals, experienced the same response to cold. Terrestrial mammals... males, with their exposed "jewelry"... were equiped with a protective physiological response to cold, a response that caused certain tendons to retract, pulling a male's precious stones closer to the body, for warmth... in many cases, and in many species, this resulted in a full retraction. Funny enough, rats are one of the species, and Deen... with his long body, slender tail and big ears... well, if you squinted, drowned rat would presently be the first impression, as stated before....
Poor Deen, emasculated by the cold!
A deep sigh...
... "Ummm... could someone get me a towel?" A puddle was rapidly forming at his feet.
Thoee couldn't help another fit of giggles, hands clasped to her belly to hold them all in.........

Ashowan's grin fell in rhythm with Thoee's smile at her mate. Poor Deen was freezing. His arms were wrapped around himself, desperate to keep warm while his hands patted the shoulders to keep friction and blood flow going strong. How was he so cold, though? When one stays in the water for a long period of time, they generally get used to the temperature. Maybe it was just abnormally chilly today. After all ... Ashowan wasn't the one in the water. They were. She had no idea how it felt.
With a shrug of her shoulders, she nodded when Thoee, walking up the bank, announced, "Yes, I believe we have enough ... ," and hefted the bucket up. Nemo strolled to the inner watershed.
In the meanwhile, Deen ... Well, he had another slip-up. Ashowan heard the splash and looked back to see what was going on. The soaking giant 'rat' emerged quicker than ever from beneath the watery depths. He leapt the last few feet onto the muddy sidelines of the River, teeth chattering all the while. "Hrrrrrr! About time! Any longer, and I think I'd've frozen off my ... "
Ashowan was already chuckling before Deen even looked down. Gods, she couldn't believe this. The half-dragon covered her eyes but could not control the laughter. Her body was shaking.
"Oh, shoot ... Ummm ... could someone get me a towel? "
Only when Deen sighed did Ashowan look up ... and even then, it was hard to fight the bursting giggles, despite the sullen ache of her sides. Thoee was lost in the moment too, for she was holding her bely in a rugged attempt to hide her humor. Shaking her head from side to side, Ashowan meandered to the rock crags in her camp site. She set the bucket down by one of them and jabbed her fingers (ungloved) into one of the many wide crags. A towel was pried loose. Nemo chucked it to Deen. Yanking a second from the rock, she threw that one to Thoee.
"I'll get a fire going so that you guys can dry up," she narrated, motioning to a bundle of wood that lay in the middle of the site. The logs were charred here and there, signifying that they'd been used multiple times but not enough to be completely barren. Ashowan dragged the bucket over to it. She then reached into one of her many pockets, procuring a lighter which was used to spark an ember. Steadily it grew. Warmth licked at the air. Glancing now at Thoee, she cackled. "You were right," said she, glancing sideways at Deen, "that was amusing."

Drying Off...
Male pride is a terrible thing to lose. Even when it's your own fault, so to speak. Deen, typical of most (if not all) in the Universe's maledom, took great pride in his external evidence of "manly" virility. Didn't matter if he knew full well what the cold would do... didn't matter that he'd made a show of himself on the matter, by his words and actions. Making humor out of his "loss", in front of witnesses, kept his rep intact... if nothing else... *ahem*.........
Well, Deen was a bit surprised Ashowan actually had towels available. However, he still stood sopping wet... so, while Ashowan got the fire going, Deen handed Thoee his towel, trotted a sufficient distance away, shook off the excess, and came back damp, to reclaim the towel his mate held out to him. No, his "problem" still existed... yes, a fire's warmth, snuggled by his mate's side, would definitely ease up the tension, and allow things to... ummm... slide back into place. It wasn't like he'd actually been emasculated, for real. Not that it would've mattered, anyway, given Nism regenerative powers....
Time to stop rambling......... *
Thoee had her own towel draped over her shoulders, yet, as Deen reached for his...
... just as Ashowan spoke her last words with a sideways glance...
... Deen found himself so distracted, he had no words to reply with.
Ahhh, yes... Thoee had used the towel as a ruse, to get him within reach. She quickly yet tenderly grasped his hand in hers, pulled him close, and used the towel she'd held out to dry her mate off. Deen simply sucked in his breath, then sighed in delight, as Thoee toweled away the dampness from fur and scale, from head to toe to tail's tip...
... everywhere, with long practiced thoroughness, Deen all the while purring his pleasure.
When she finished, Deen took his mate's towel, and returned the favor with equal care and tenderness, while Thoee also purred. Odd, that purring, since Nism bore no resemblance to felines, in any other way. The whole act of affection, carried out un-self-consciously, in front of a sole witness, through stretched up arms, turned up muzzles, stretched out legs, presentation of crotches and tails... the whole display of flexibility and easy grace. A towel dance, if you will.
A dance that left behind two very relaxed yet damply ruffled Nism....
The fire would indeed help with the rest, along with a good grooming. Better to just enjoy warmth and company and food, for now, before brushing fur and polishing scales. At least all the drying off activity had helped Deen out... not to mention Thoee's thoroughness. Yes, everything was back to normal, if still a bit snuggled, in the chill Riverside air. Pride, restored...
... "Hey, Ashy...." Deen approached the Reaper, Thoee glued to his hip... "I promised you a grill... still want to take me up on the offer?"
Thoee lightly thwapped her mate on the back of the head with her still damp tail's tuft. Even hip to hip, her flexibility and aim proved impeccable......... *

Ashowan was busy stoking the fire to make it stronger when Deen sauntered off to shake the excess fluid from his body, matted and now damp rather than flooded. He returned to gather up the towel offered by Thoee. Then the two slid into a snuggle by the fire. But when the Reaper's haphazard quip fell upon the duo, Deen looked positively ... well, what would be the correct term? Stunned? No. More like ... clueless of what to say: speechless. It was a funny fact and the Reaper found herself counting it as a victory.
Thoee responded to the taunt by gathering Deen up and 'fluffing' him with the towel. She took to drying every nook and cranny off. Ashowan rolled her eyes and poked a bit more at the fire. The embers were rising firmly into the air now. And the flame was showing no signs of potentially dying sometime in the near future. Good. She turned, sizing up the bucket o' fish. Poor guys were still flopping around in there. She felt a pang of sympathy for them, but then recalled that they had the memory span of about ... what was it again? Fifteen seconds tops?
"Hey, Ashy ... ," Deen approached her, cutting off any mercy thoughts she might have been entertaining. Again with that nickname ... "I promised you a grill ... still want to take me up on that offer?"
"Mayhaps," replied she with a grin and a nod. In the back of her mind, Ashowan wondered if the two could really stomach fish raw ... ? She knew that she could. Acquiring her draconic appearance and powers had come with the ability to digest just about anything aside from stone. Devouring fish raw, uncooked and literally fresh from the stream, would not endanger her with E Coli ... or anything dimly like that. "If you conjure one up somehow, I can cook these bad boys up in no time." With a tomboyish grin, she tapped at the bucket. The fish went 'wheee' in response.

Grilled...
Female tail-tuft had found its mark, but male had proved swift. Caught tail, and gave it a nibble near the tuft, before he let it go.........
It felt good to settle by a warm fire, heat seeping through his not quite dry fur, till it reached skin, ruffled fur helping that goal. Even better, the warmth of a good female, pressed against his side, as they both got their butts comfortably settled on a nearby rock, tails tucked under, to serve as cushions. Base of tails, useful for this purpose, without worry of cutting off their blood supply... no numb-tails, for this pair! Deen aided his backside's drying by fluffing out his shroudruff, to catch and reflect some of the heat to the fur under his ruff. The metalic sheen of his underfeathers helped this reflection, to a degree. Exactly what they were intended to do, since a male Nism's shroudruff served as more than a way to attract the opposite sex....
"Mayhaps...." Ashowan's grin colored her words, in reply to Deen's repeated offer... "If you conjure one up somehow, I can cook these bad boys up in no time." (*Side note: Given the fifty-fifty odds, some of those fish were most likely bad girls...*)
Though Deen made the offer, it was Thoee who replied, a gentle hand lightly clamped to her mate's muzzle in a shushing gesture, as she nodded towards Ashowan and waved her tuft...
... "Stay, My Love... I will go and bring it back."
Thoee released Deen's muzzle, and gave it a brief lick, before she slid from her place and started walking away...
... "It's next to the third fridge, I think, just behind that rack of spices we picked up on Ghemmitth."
Female nodded, then turned back to her course, leapt...
... and empty air swallowed her up, from tip of nose to tip of tuft.
Deen focused his attentions on the Reaper, while Thoee was away. Ran claws through drying fur, as his eyes shifted from Ashowan to flame...
... "Thanks for the towels and the fire... and good catch on the fish."
Yes, a conversation starter, while they waited. Male Nism allowed his legs to relax further, the better to catch and direct the warmth to nether regions and belly, while his hands reached towards the fire, to warm his forelimb scales....

Ashowan hadn't taken in the odds that some of the fish resting in the bucket were female. But now that it was mentioned, some fond memories were brought back to life - namely when a certain role-player had gone crabbing and found out, too late, that she caught a female Blue (which was illegal). Of course she didn't realize this until she cracked the crab open after boiling it ...
But that's a story for another time.
Thoee replied instead of Deen. She placed a hand on her mate's muzzle, nodding towards Ashowan. "Stay, My Love ... ," she said to Deen. "I will go and bring it back."
Ashowan was half-tempted to offer to help. But before she could say a word of protest, the Nism was walking off. Deen called after her with, "It's next to the third fridge, I think, just behind the rack of spices we picked up on Ghemmitth."
Thoee nodded, turned, and started off. But ... she jumped and was suddenly ... gone? What the - ? Ashowan's eyes widened. "Did she teleport?" she found herself thinking aloud, tilting her head on an angle. How peculiar. Here she thought that teleporters were hard to come by ...
"Thanks for the towels and the fire ... and good catch on the fish." That was Deen, his eyes darting randomly.
Ashowan laughed, stoking the fire once more before pondering how to off the fish in a more ... peaceful manner. She decided to do it the old way ... her old way, that was. Extending the palms of her hands over the bucket's mouth, she made use of her air elemental magick and began sucking the oxygen from their lungs. Frantic gills sped their pace out of fear, but then they gradually began to slow.
"You guys nearly kicked my butt, you know," said the Reaper conversationally, earnest in what she said. "You've got a wicked throw, and boy ... Thoee can hit!" From the corners of her eyes (she had both of them now, at least. A month in the future, she would not be so fortunate), Deen stretched his forelimbs to the flaming pyre. "A couple years back, I got trapped on a mountain in upstate New York. That's back on Earth. An avalanche dislodged myself and a couple of others. Because the snow drenched our clothes, we had to rely on multiple fires to dry them off, lest hypothermia would set in."

There and Back...
Deen grinned at Ashowan's compliment, and waved it away with a tail's gesture...
... "And people say snow is fun...." A roll of eyes... "Reminds me of this incident about seven months back. Thoee and I got caught in a very nasty sandstorm, the very moment we exited Threshhold. I ended up having all the flesh stripped from my bones, and my mate didn't fare much better... it was that bad." At the memory, Deen couldn't help but scratch himself a bit... "Hrrrrr... I have this aversion to silicon, felt like I had a buttload of sand in me for weeks! I also lost my best outfit in that storm........."
Deen gave Ashowan a raised-eyebrow look...
... "Yeah, I don't always run around naked. Sometimes, I have to respect the native's taboos, if I don't want to scare them away."
Another moment, tongue in teeth...
... "Oh, almost forgot...."
Deen recovered the used towels he and her had tossed on the rock behind them, whipped his tail around damp cotton, and held them out to the Reaper. Then his head twitched around, eyes focused on the spot where Thoee had crossed the Threshhold...
... "Ashy... hold that thought. I'll be right back."
Quick as the proverbial wink, male Nism hopped up and skipped away, just in time to meet his female, as she emerged from the Threshhold, carrying grill in one hand, pack of supplies over shoulder in the other. Deen recovered the grill from Thoee's hand...
... Thoee went to another rock, near the one they'd sat on, but higher up, and a bit flater. While Deen found a good spot and started unfolding the small, suitcase-sized device, Thoee set out a selection of spices, cutlery and fresh veggies... and a stick that formed a cutting board at a single alien whisper. Like the cutting-board stick, the grill also proved surprising, the way Deen kept unfolding and securing components, till a quite fancy and shiny cooking appliance stood ready, large enough to cook all the fish they had at once.
Both finished their jobs swiftly, and at the same time, then both stepped aside, with a wave of tails and nod of heads.........

"And people say snow is fun ... " Deen rolled his eyes.
Ashowan blinked. She held a finger up as if she were about to make a point. "There's a lot of romanticism about it, you know. Fireplaces ... hot cocoa and coffee ... Warm bundles of clothing ... Not to mention Christmas rolls around that time of year, so mistletoe's abound and ... " The Reaper made a disgusted face by sticking out her tongue. "Too much of a touchy-feely holiday. Valentine's Day and Christmas ... neh."
"Reminds me of this incident," Deen continued, "about seven months back. Thoee and I got caught in a very nasty sandstorm, the very moment we exited Threshold. I ended up having all the flesh stripped from my bones, and my mate didn't fare much better ... it was that bad."
Ashowan's brows rose. "Stripped from your bones ... ?" Was he being serious or just exaggerating?
"Deen scratched himself. "Hrrrrr ... I have this aversion to silicon, felt like I had a butt load of sand in me for weeks! I also lost my best outfit in that storm ... " Raising a brow at the Reaper as if knowing the question before it came, he said, "Yeah, I don't always run around naked. Sometimes, I have to respect the native's taboos, if I don't want to scare them away."
Ashowan laughed genuinely. She waved a hand as if to dismiss the notion. "The newbies in this place are usually too awestruck with the new world around them to be bothered with nudity. Besides, you'd be surprised at how many people run around naked here ... " Or who want to see others naked ... , she thought with a shudder, remembering Mono.
"Oh, almost forgot ... " Bundling the towels up, Deen chucked them back to the rock behind them. He whipped his tail around something that looked like wet cotton and handed them out to the Reaper, who could only blink at the gesture. Before she could inquire, Deen's head snapped around. Thoee was back. "Ashy ... hold that thought. I'll be right back."
The wink earned a sweatdrop, while Ashowan mostly mused on that bloody nickname they kept using on her. Makes me sound like a two-year old, she groaned, smiling a bit. Not that I'm complaining. I mean ... considering the names I've been called at two-years old ... I should take it as a compliment. Nemo just shook her head and watched the two interact. Thoee was carrying a grill in one hand and supplies in another. Deen took the grill. They unloaded everything on a nearby, but higher, rock. Ashowan marveled at the cutlery with them, the foods too ... Damn, they were prepared, eh? And it was all in a compact kit ... heh. Once finished they stepped back, nodding their heads and waving their tails. Ashowan was on her feet in an instant. She dashed to the closet-rock, reached in ... and grabbed out a flashy apron with bright yellow embroidery.
'Kiss the Cook' was threaded in the front. Looking down at the words, she glanced to the Nisms and offered a sheepish grin. "I kinda ... stole this off a cook back in the City. Doubt he'll miss it. He had about twenty others just like it." With a shrug she whipped it on and tied the strings. Then she bounced over to the bucket, grabbed it, and bounded to the grill. She loomed over the knives and such with a wild gleam in her eyes, picking up a spatula and turning it over to examine the shine it gave off. Blinking at the Nisms, she gave a spectacular smile and struck a pose - one hand on her hip and the spatula pointing towards the sky (like a disco dancer). "Watch ... and be amazed!"
So full of herself, huh?
Well ... she had a reason. What Naira lacked in defense she made up for in speed ... in just about anything. Her arms moved so quickly they appeared as nothing but blurs. So quickly ... and so neatly ... were all the fish chopped and skinned and gutted that they were on the sizzling grill (once she figured out how to work it) in a matter of seconds. And there wasn't a drop of blood from the pescines to be seen ...

Fish Fry...
What Ashowan did with the tail-delivered towels, Deen didn't catch... or care. They were her towels, after all. He'd simply "handed" them over, so she could hang them up to dry. Better than leaving them draped over the back-half of the rock he and his mate had been sitting on, where time would only bring on mildew......... *
Indeed, Deen had been totally serious....
But that fact is for later detailing....
Presently, for a few moments, they watched the Reaper at work... no, not at her normal work... they watched her tie up a humorously phrased-upon apron, then enjoyed the show, as she went at her cooking preparations with obvious gusto and skill. Thoee only broke off for the time needed to set the grooming kit she'd also pulled out of the pack... set it on their resting rock by the fire, for later. When she returned to her mate's side, she hugged him tight, and they both finished watching the show...
... in silence.
Both, inhaling a deep sniff of grilling fish and... veggies? Wonderful smell. Deen's tail snagged a pair of neatly excised fish skeletons, one he offered to Thoee, the other, he crunched on himself, a simple bite to remove fishhead from spine. A pre-meal snack for the two of them to enjoy. It was very nice of Ashowan to leave these appetizers out for the two Nism. Didn't take long to chew and swallow, nor did it take much for Thoee to pick a few bones from her teeth with a dainty pinky claw. After their snack, male licked female hands clean, and female licked male hands clean.
Then...
... "That was... amazing. I've never seen a humanoid move that fast." Deen offered his tail...
... "I'd shake your hand, but mine are kinda wet, right now, and I don't think you'd appreciate the slobber."
Thoee wrapped her tail around her male, and gave him a nuzzle, snout to neck...
... "He is incorrigible, but I love him just the same...."
She gave Ashowan a sideways glance and a flick of ears...
... "Thank you. I feel this will be a meal to remember, long after grandmotherhood has passed."
Deen returned the nuzzle with a cheek-lick, accepted his tail back into his full possession, then took another sniff of grilled fish...
... "Oh, you asked about my bones... our Creators made sure we were difficult to kill by putting our Lifeforce elements into an adamantium skeleton and three Keystones..."
"... here..." He touched the mirrored scale embedded in his forehead...
"... here..." He touched his furry chest, right where his heart would be...
"... and here." He waved a hand over his crotch.........

Windra the ‘Dense Wonder Girl’ didn’t pick up that the ‘damp cotton’ pieces were actually the towels. Yep. She was still as brain dead as ever: a fact which may or may not ever change in the course of history. She liked to be utterly brainless … But indeed, that would be something to be drifted on later. Ashowan would get to washing and drying and folding and stashing the articles after the meal was served. In the meantime, she lavished in her work. Just because the Reaper was eternally young didn’t mean she didn’t take an interest in things that would awe adults. Besides, when you ended up roughing it for the majority of your life, you learn a lot of useful trades.
“That was … amazing,” Deen commented. “I’ve never seen a humanoid move that fast.” He offered his tail out. Ashowan rose a brow. “I’d shake your hand,” he explains, “but mine are kinda wet, right now, and I don’t think you’d appreciate the slobber.”
Laughing, the Reaper extended a free hand and shook his tail gently. When she drifted back to making sure the fish wasn’t about to burn (”Damn you, Salmon! DAMN YOU!”), Ashowan shrugged. ”It’s sort of a birthright from my folks, passed down from generation to generation. The speed came from my father’s side. Hindsight came from my mother’s.” There was a certain hardened edge to her voice when she divulged these facts to her audience. She sincerely hoped they would not ask her about her lineage. They weren’t the type of people she would like to talk about.
Thoee wrapped her tail around Deen, nuzzling him gently. “He is incorrigible, but I love him just the same … “
Grinning, the Reaper couldn’t help wondering how the heck they’d met anyway. They acted like close friends around one another, not just lovers. Obviously they’d shared some closeness before becoming a pair. Perhaps partners-in-crime, one knowing the other so well … going on random adventures together, coincidentally always running into one another to save each other’s skin … She could definitely see that happening to Thoee and Deen.
“Thank you. I feel this will be a meal to remember, long after grandmotherhood has passed.”
Ashowan waved a hand. ”It’s just fish,” she noted light-heartedly. Making use of the spatula, she pried the roasting meal from the grill and flipped them once. ”I’m certainly not the best. Should show you this one place I know … Strange food. Cheesecake’s outta this world, though. Literally.”
Once Deen took a whiff, he proceeded to answer something Ashowan asked earlier. “Oh, you asked about my bones … our Creators made sure we were difficult to kill by putting our Lifeforce elements into an adamantium skeleton and three Keystones … “ Ashowan looked up briefly between watching over the fish (they were nearly done now … the fire was so intense). “Here.” Deen touched the mirrored scale on his forehead – the Headstone. “Here.” Then there was his chest – the heart cavity. And finally … his hand faltered towards his groin. “And here.”
Ashowan restrained a chuckle and a quip, though her mind wandered to The Todd from [Scrubs]. Somewhere in the back of her mind she noted that she’d have to thank Windra for introducing her to that show. ”Three weakest, most vital parts of the body … ,” noted she, but then thought about the third and shrugged, adding, ”sort of … It’s just that when you said you’d been stripped to your bones, I kinda imagined the loss of blood alone would do you in. But as you noted, you’re difficult to kill.” Green eyes fell to the meal. Both sides were well good and done. She flipped the grill off, searching far and wide for plates. ”Thanks for letting me use your grill. That was neat what with it being able to be fit into a suitcase and all. Compact, much?”

It's Just Fish...
Though curious beings, Nism knew when and when not to ask questions... well, depending on the individual, but in this case, neither Thoee nor Deen pried into Ashowan's past. Both had heard the hardened edge, and taken the "hint". In the same way, Deen hadn't given away Nism weaknesses... hadn't blabbed how a Nism could be killed. Yes, they were a tough species, but not indestructable, despite their adamantine bones. Shatter their Heartstones, and they'd be just as dead as a human speared through the heart....
*End of Ramble......... *
Thoee slipped away from her mate, and retrieved a set of plates... sturdy glasses, for drinks... proper silverware... and a bottle of wine. How the pack still had room for the rest of these supplies remained a mystery. Deen, ever since Ashowan's mention of birthright, speed and hindsight... well, he'd been glancing thoughtfully at the Reaper's lower half, careful not to let her see his glances. He did expend the effort to listen and keep silent. Then...
... "Oh, yeah, you're welcome. Our little storeroom has limited space, so I always try to keep equipment as compact as I can."
Only now did the male Nism wipe his hands on his thighs, to dry them...
... "By the way, if your father gave you speed, and your mother gave you hindsight... who gave you the dragonish hinie?"
There, he'd said it!
Whop!
Thoee's aim hit back-of-head with disciplinary force, tail-tuft aswirl with the scent of nutmeg and citrus......... *

Thoee wandered off to set out for a set of plates, which she snatched up upon finding. The female Nism also grabbed a couple of glasses for drinks ... despite the fact that Ashowan actually didn't have anything stashed away. There was some Cognac, yes ... but that was well hidden from view for a couple of reasons which she would not divulge unless people were extremely curious. That drink, when gorged by a mortal, would be fatal. An immortal/undead would become lightly tipsy. Back to the story, however. Ashowan was not oblivious to the strange glances Deen was shooting in her direction, particularly to her lower half - the twitching dragon's tail and clacking alabaster talons.
"Oh, yeah, you're welcome," Deen drolled, though he seemed distracted. "Our little storeroom has limited space, so I always try to keep equipment as compact as I can." Ashowan didn't get a chance to burst out into laughter before Thoee whacked him in the back of the head. The Reaper's mouth twisted into a widely amused smirk. She was fighting hysterics and 'air-tapped' Deen's nose from a distance.
"No, there was no adultery involved. How would that be possible, anyway? Human ... dragon ... ," Ashowan chuckled. She tugged at her tail, gripping it by the broken yellow spade. "This was actually because of a mix up." Nemo managed to procure a couple of plates and slid the cooked fish on them. Turning back, she continued. I hitched a ride with a teleporting dragon who lived in Deep Forest. During the trip, we kinda merged. Since then I've gained most of her air abilities."[/color]

Tailed...
After removing the last supplies from her pack and fastening it closed again, Thoee returned to her mate's side, to cuddle and rub the back of his head... that very familiar look in her eyes, one Deen saw quite often. Part "You're in trouble, Mister" and part "But I have plans for your body later, anyway"... a look that made Deen lick his lips with a bad-boy half-grin, before he quietly cleared his throat. And even though Ashowan had only air-tapped his nose, he still found himself rubbing at the spot, to cover his expression. Then both of his hands grasped his own tail out of the air where it waved, gave it a few swift licks... a narrow-eyed, squinty stare, as the tip flicked with an apparent life of its own...
... "Kinda like in that movie... you know, 'The Fly'? I've heard of weirder things happening, and I've been to places where cross-species mating happens more often than you'd think. Places where genetic tech and plain nature has created some... very interesting crossbreeds." He was, in part, thinking of Sarah Bree-Carey, the young female shifter they had met some weeks ago, result of a four-species generational intermingling. And Syalae, another female cross, of dragon/unicorn heritage.
With her mate's final words, Thoee gave him a slight shove, and she herself moved to help Ashowan with laying out their supper. The grill's alloy had not only heated fast and evenly, to grill the fish with tender care, it had also cooled off in a matter of seconds, once the power had been turned off. Deen went about re-packing the grill in its case, put case beside pack, and helped carry his share of the meal back to the fire. By this time, both him and her had dry fur. Dry enough to groom, but they had a meal to eat. Thoee poured the wine...
... but Deen started off the meal with a toast...
... "To Life, the Universe, and Everything in it... may all our Futures be bright!"

Ashowan placed the last bit of fish on a plate and set it aside, then went to work cleaning off the metal rungs on the grill once it cooled off. She watched Thoee give Deen that peculiar look and shook her head, daring to guess what it meant and also daring not to ask. She wasn't sure she wanted to know. Besides, Deen's expression kind of told the whole story ... He rubbed the spot where the half-dragon's wind tendril had tapped him and, with a narrowed glimpse, began to strike up conversation again.
"Kinda like in that movie ... you know, 'The Fly'?" Ashowan chuckled at the high-pitched vocal chiming in her skull ("Help meeeeeeeee, help meeeeeeeeeee!"). "I've heard of weirder things happening, and I've been to places where cross-species mating happens more often than you'd think. Places where genetic tech and plain nature has created some ... very interesting crossbreeds."
Ashowan could imagine that. There were so many strange worlds out there, so many strange beings. Verrier, for example, was a monster she had the pleasure of killing a while back. The thing had been an odd mix of centipede, lizard, and ... she made a hazard to guess the third portion of him was a plant. After all, he had vines coming out of his back. "You don't have to tell me twice," she commented, swiping away some charcoal and standing back to look at the grill. It was practically glistening.
Thoee shoved Deen a bit then moved to help Ashowan with 'dinner'. (Was it really that late? The sky did get dark ... ) By now, Deen had gotten to packing the grill up. Once that was done he carried his share of the meal back to the flames. Ashowan took up a plate for herself, experimentally prodding the fish for good measure, and followed after them. Thoee was pouring something into the glasses ... Wine? A light grin spread across her face.
"You guys are really full of surprises."
Deen started with a toast. "To Life, the Universe, and Everything in it ... may all our Futures be bright!"
A dim expression flashed across Ashowan's bright green irises for a second, only to vanish into the ether. Her thoughts had gone far away for the moment but were swift to return before they could cause a distraction. Raising her glass into the air, she joined in the chime with a bright smile and a jingling call. "To the Future!" Indeed, her own future might be dismal ... and things were bound to happen ... but Ashowan always hoped that somehow, in the end, things would turn out as they were meant to be.
Even if it meant fighting tooth and claw to get it that way.

Toasted...
No, it wasn't really that late. With Deep Forest being on the cusp of Winter, clouds had simply covered up the sunshine, and made the firelight more noticeable against rock, tree and ground. It was most likely around 11:27... 11:42 Ante Meridiem (AM). It only seemed like the whole afternoon had passed!
Again, male and female Nism sat on their rock, on the base of their tails... sipped their wine after the toast... and then dug-in to their spiced and grilled fish. Ahhh, yesss... absolutely delicious! Thoee fed Deen a bit of her fish, and Deen returned the gesture. Then...
... "Ashowan...?" This time, no nickname... "If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We've chosen you to be our guide, to help us settle, for what time my mate and I plan to stay here. But you barely know us. It's a guide's right to ask what they wish, so they can guide with knowledge."
Thoee added, her tail's tuft held out...
... "We will not ask further questions in return, Dear Lady, since we already chose you, and trust you to the task."
Deen grinned for the upteenth time, though...
... "Not any importa...*!*"
With three well-placed fingers, Thoee held Deen's muzzle shut, teeth clamped against tongue...
... "No questions you do not want to answer on your own, without either of us asking the question."
Thoee was very firm on her point, before she allowed her mate control of his mouth, so he could continue his meal.........
